『the prologue is based after the events of this book』

the outer banks , paradise on earth. it's the sort of place where you either have two houses or two jobs. two tribes , one island. the kooks , and the pogues.

the kooks. they live on figure eight , rich side of the island. mostly posers who pretend to give a shit about the environment , or heart disease , or whatever fundraiser they plan that week. attendees of kook academy , where they learn how to piss with elegance , or some shit.

we're the pogues. we live on the south side , or the cut. home of the working class who make a living bussing tables , washing yachts , running charters. okay. so , the downside of pogue life is we're ignored and neglected. but the upside of pogue life? we're ignored and neglected , which means we do whatever we want , whenever we want.

there's jj , my best friend since i moved to outer banks. he's about as local as they come. latest in a long line of tax cheats , kleptomaniacs and risk-takers. best surfer i know , he taught me with ease , when i'd never touched a surfboard in my life. i've had a thing for him for years. since i met him , really. luckily for me , it turned out well.

and then , there's kiara , or kie , as we call her. my closest friend in the obx. she hangs out with us when she's not busy at high teas and debutante balls. if you couldn't tell already , she's a rich kid , actually. foot in both worlds. her family owns the wreck , this outer banks institution. total cash cow with the tourists , which is why i work there.

sarah. used to be a kook princess , before she ditched it for us. i mean , who wouldn't ? sarah's a complete angel , a living barbie. i have no idea where she gets it from , because her dad , ward , and her brother , rafe , aren't exactly making it to the pearly gates.

and there's pope, the brains of the operation , mostly likely to make it out of here , and the smartest person i know. little bit of a weirdo , wants to be a coroner. his father's this legendary character, heyward. anything you wanted on the island, heyward could get for you in a flash. now, i'm not sure heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn't matter. he was a pogue, just like the rest of us.

then , there's john b. he lives in an old fish shack on the marsh , which is where we hang out most of the time. john b's obsessed with finding his father , since he disappeared at sea. a lot of people would call him the leader of our group , which he sort of is. forever leading us on adventures , and getting us into trouble.

so, that's my crew. and there's me, luella kimura-kinsley. i'm not a local girl , but i like to think i've learned to be. i moved from philly to outer banks when i was sixteen , and i instantly found the pogues. they're my everything. and , my family. my mom , dad and older brother , hunter. sometimes i still miss philly , and what i left behind , but outer banks was the best thing that ever happened to me.
