Pagans Of Old?

Paganism is more about the land and the animals that we share it with as sacred beings. The old paths of the craft are oath bound and often solitary for the most part. Most current folklore does suggest not going after those who are solitary and deal with the unseen forces that are best left a mystery for good reasons. For the old paths in Paganism are more about being in tune with the world around us and its many cycles; cycles like the moon phases, seasons, life and death and many other cycles. There are modern path of Paganism that add their own rules ones that Pagans of old paths are not restricted to those set rules that more modern paths have to adhere to. Most Pagans regardless if they follow a modern or ancient path often have a familiar which is a deep soul level bond with any animal(s). Some have one while others have more than one familiar at a time. Familiars are part of some paths and practices depending on the individuals role in the the Pagan community itself.

Bunnies are one of the many familiars that actively practicing Pagans keep as familiars. Familiars aren't pets in Paganism but rather they are sacred beings to us as they are teachers, spirit guides, healers and overall just part of the practice depending on the path. Not all Pagans are required to keep a familiar but certain paths do require a familiar as part of its practice; however many Pagans have a familiar regardless if it is a requirement for their path or just optional for them if they desire to have a familiar which simply becomes part of the practice. The old ways do not look like the more modern practices of Paganism; the old ways have a completely different set of rules as those who practice the old paths are solitary and only gather in groups of 3 to 4 members max as to stay unnoticed by outsiders and to the rest of the Pagan community as Pagans have been known to turn on each other in the Pagan community for dark reasons. Paganism and First Nations/Indigenous Cultures are different from each other in a number of ways but when you strip the differences and look at the core of their cultures to see the similarities at the core; the land, the animals, the water, the moon & sun, balance are some of the many core similarities that the sister creeds all have at their core. They are same at the core while being completely different at the surface just like prey animals; even more so for bunnies who share traits with dogs, cats and prey all in one body which makes understanding them hard unless you understand the similarities that all prey species share at the core. All while being completely different at the surface. 

Pagans of the old paths believe and know that we are part of nature not above it. When a Pagan keeps a familiar we listen to the animal observe them and get to know them as an individual; we know things about caring for certain animals that many are unaware about in the first place. We don't treat familiars like a normal pet; a familiar is a sacred bond with an animal that you keep. So a familiar or familiars often tend to get the royal treatment in their homes; which is to do the fact that the familiar bond itself makes them a sacred being. Rabbits and Hares were common familiars for those who had true raw powers; they were messengers, spies and look outs for witch hunters. Pagans allow the animal to lead them when it comes to learning as it is the best way to strengthen the familiar bond.

Allowing bunnies to show us what they actually need to fully thrive then care becomes easier; surrenders start declining with adoptions going up would be the result of learning from them directly. Researchers have started researching more into bunnies as a whole as of 2020 but they are just barely scratching the surface of these sentient beings that bunnies are. Bunnies thrive when their instincts are honored and respected; any Pagan who has a familiar or companion would say the same regardless of what species they have or if they have prey or predators. This is exactly what instinct based care is.

Respect them as beings and individuals; respecting their hardwired instincts and behaviours and respect the bond are all key parts of Paganism. Benefits of doing this is plentiful as it makes bunny care accessible anyone barrier free in so many ways then the normal one size fits all solution which is problematic. Plus the results like good behaviours are long term instead of short term; also making having trios or more possible with fewer issues over all and long term. While being more cost effective at the same time by making it cost the same long term to keep three or more bunnies for the same amount or under for a pair of bunnies or just one bunny.

They are highly intelligent in nature with a very complex social structure that is special to just the Wild European Rabbits. Which we currently understand very little on Wild European Rabbits in the wild; same for the domestic bunnies as they are descendants of Wild European Rabbits. It is impossible to care for something that we do not have a full understanding of what they need in order to thrive instead of surviving. To have a bunny then one must be one with the colony.
