Chapter 21

Shen Lanlan was accustomed to taking advantage of small things. Sometimes, she would manage to get two extra spring onions when she went grocery shopping. However, she never expected to encounter such a difficult situation today. Her usual tricks were completely ineffective on Chen Yuan, and she had never faced such a stubborn person. Normally, when relatives ask for help, most people wouldn't refuse, especially for such a trivial matter like tutoring.

It seemed as if the other party didn't care about family relationships at all. Could this person live in society without caring about relatives and friends? Could they really say they would never rely on others and only rely on themselves? No one would dare say that, right? Did Chen Yuan not treat her relatives as family, or was Shen Huai used to her behavior? She had no understanding of the rules at all.

Shen Lanlan soon realized that it was Shen Huai who had become accustomed to her ways. Just like Shen Huai, his words were also virtuous. The person who entered the house was Shen Huai himself, wearing a stern expression that seemed to suggest she owed him tens of thousands of dollars.

"Cousin, what do you mean by this? My cousin has never asked you for anything else, and it's only for English tutoring for my child. I didn't expect my sister-in-law to turn me away. Where should I put my face?"

Shen Huai also knew that Chen Yuan was conducting makeup classes. He had been busy with work in his unit lately and hadn't paid much attention to it. However, based on his understanding, as long as he paid, Chen Yuan would definitely agree to provide makeup classes.

"I don't know about the rest, but it's eight yuan for a child."

Shen Lanlan was stunned. "Money is a bit tight for me right now, and my brother and sister don't want to take credit."

"Then come back when you have the money."

Shen Huai's face turned cold, and the conversation ended there.

Shen Lanlan didn't dare to argue further. She feared that the other party would get angry. Angering a man, especially someone like Shen Huai, a former soldier, was not something she wanted to risk.

She angrily led her child and left Shen Huai's house, with some leftover apples in her pocket. The fire of anger inside her couldn't be extinguished, so she turned and rushed to the old house of the Shen family across the street. Shen Huai's father was Shen Lanlan's second uncle, so she went there in search of someone who could support her in confronting the couple.

After all, they should give her some face. Elders always have to consider their reputation, right?

When Shen Lanlan arrived at the old house across the street, Shen Changan and Zhang Guilan were having a meal. On the dining table, there was a plate of cabbage stir-fried with minimal oil and water, fried noodles with pickled vegetables, and two steamed buns made from rice flour.

The difference between this meal and the two beautifully presented plates of sweet and sour pork ribs that Chen Yuan had on the opposite side was vast. They were not on the same level at all.

As soon as Shen Lanlan entered the room, she wrinkled her nose and said, "Uncle, Aunt, are you really going to eat this?"

Shen Changan saw the two somewhat plain dishes on the table and felt a bit embarrassed. He hadn't paid much attention to it before when he ate, but now that Shen Lanlan pointed it out, he realized how simple the meal was.

"What's the matter, niece?"

Zhang Guilan pretended to be humble. "Have you eaten, niece? If you haven't, we can eat together."
