“Okay guys, this is our chance at mortal life. We have the monster proof phones, courtesy of Leo, and a new school. Mess this up, and we don’t get another chance. Don’t blow it.”
“Wow Annabeth, way to be encouraging on our first day of school.” Leo said sarcastically.
“I’m talking to you, Leo. You’re the craziest of all of us.” Annabeth scowled.
“Yeah, yeah, I get it. Don’t break anything or set anything on fire. Got it.” Annabeth’s glare intensified, and Percy wrapped an arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders. “Don’t worry Annabeth, it’s gonna be okay. What could go wrong?”
Apparently, a lot of things.
“And so, when using the distributive property, x could only be equal to-”
“Beep. Beep. Beep. Be-”
“Whose phone decided to go off an disrupt this lesson?” Mr. Ashmond, the new algebra teacher, stared accusingly at the class. Percy smiled sheepishly. “Ah, Mr. Jackson. Causing trouble on your first day? Detention.”
“May I at least take this call, sir? It’s urgent.” While speaking, Percy discreetly turned his phone for the other new girl, Annabeth I think her name was, to see. She gave an imperceptible nod.
“Fine, I suppose. But go in the hallway, so you don’t interrupt the rest of the lesson. Yu will make up what you’ve missed in detention this afternoon.” Percy darted into the hallway and answered the call. Not a minute later, Annabeth raised her hand and asked to go to the bathroom, she left, but stayed just outside the door and started to converse. I guess elves had better hearing than humans, because I could hear the they were saying, as my desk was right next to the door.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. Hi, my name is Sophie Foster-Ruewen, daughter of Grady and Edaline Ruewen. I’m from the Lost Cities. Believe it or not, elves are real, but they’re not how you’d think. Anyway, Fitx, Biana, Keefe, Dex, Tam, Linh and I were on a mission in the Forbidden Cities, in New York, at a school called Midtown High. A few Neverseen agents had infiltrated the school, and it was our job to find them. We had had three current suspects: Peter Parker, Ned Leeds, and Michelle Jones-Watson. They all had been acting suspicious during school days, leaving class at random times and not coming back for hours, sometimes even days. A few times, they came back smelling like smoke or something even worse. They also always seemed exhosded after their adventures. And none of our telepaths could read their minds. They were our only suspects, until the new kids showed up. Ten in total; Annabeth Chase, Percy Jackson, Nico DiAngelo, Will Solace, Thalia Grace, Leo Valdez, Piper McLean, Hazel Levesque, Frank Zhang, and Reyna Ramirez-Arellano. They appeared in the middle of the year, claiming to be “transfer students from another country.” Of course, none of us believed them. Nobody just dhowed up like that in the middle of the year, especially not such a big group. They were immediatly added to our suspect list. We’d started off just bserving from afar, but soon we might start to take acrtion.
Anyway, back to the conversation. I shook my head to clear my thoughts and continued to listen in.
“What do you need Magnus?” Annabeth asked. Magnus, that must be the person on the phone.
“I need help! Hearth and I were on a quest, issued by Odin, when one of the monsters attacked! They’re from another panthenon, we can’t kill them! Help! Get over here as soon as y–AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!” The boy, Magnus, screamed, then the call ended. There was silence for a minute, then Percy spoke. “We need to go. I can get there by vapor traveling, you’ve got your owls, Nico has shadow travel, Hazel has Arion, Frank can turn into a bird or something, Reyna has Pegasus, Will has sun travel, Leo has fire travel, and…I think that’s it. So, Piper, Jason, and Thalia have no way of travel. Maybe…oh! We can get Frank to turn into a dragon or something and carry them!” Annabeth applauded. “Good plan, Seaweed Brain. Alright, lets get them out here so we can get to my cousin, and fast.”
Annabeth looked in through the corner of the window, made sure no one was watching, and made a hand symbol at Leo. He noticed, and started tapping out a pattern on his desk. The rest of the group noticed and shared a look. They looked like they were having a mental conversatyion, and quick. Leo nodded and with a solid motion, lit his fingertip of fire. I gasped. He must be part of the Neverseen, a pyrokinetic! I didn’t think there were any more.
“Do you have something to add, Miss Foster?” I jumped a little and turned to face Mr. Ashmond. The rest of the class was starting to giggle.
“Uh-um-n-no sir.” I replied quickly. The laughter increased. “Then will you please answer the question on the board?” I stared at the question. “Um, well, if 10(x – b) = c – (8 – b), then b must equal 3, because–
“Agh! I’m on fire! Help!” Leo screamed from his seat in the middle of the classroom. He was jumping up and down, and the back of his shirt had caught on fire.
The rest of the new kids started screaming, apparently trying to add to the panic. It was working. Someone hit the fire alarm, and everyone ran screaming into the halls, the teachers trying tp uselessly corrale the kids into straight orderly lines. In all of the chaos(I ligit almost capitalized the word "chaos" here) all of our suspects managed to escape. My friends and I grouped together and decided to follow them. We found the large group behind an amanded building a few blocks away, but it wasn't what we expected. They were fighting each other, and it was really weird. Peter was dressed in some weird spider suit, MJ was hitting people with books, and Ned was trying to help out wherever he could. Percy had water swirling around him, obviously an experienced hydrokinetic, Leo was a pyrokinetic, Will seemed to be an expert Flasher, Piper was a Beguiler, Jason and Thalia were Chargers, and Nico was a Shade. The rest had weird abilities that I didn't even know of. Frank could shapeshift, Hazel was holding chunks of metal, and Annabeth was somehow controling owls around her. Reyna, Ned, and MJ were the only ones that seemed to be Talentless, but Reyna was an amazing fighter and MJ was pretty good. It was insane, I had no idea what half of these...things were. I didn't know what else to call them. None of them seemed normal.
Keefe voiced what we were all thinking:
"What the heck?"
