This is a drama film about a couple going through divorce. It is a sad film, but a good sad film. As a person who has witnessed a failing marriage, it undoubtedly depicts how messy the divorce process is.

More than that, the casts are really effective actors and actresses. The lines, subtleties, and gestures are very human, which makes this film more relatable even for a person who has never gone through marriage and divorce.

What I also like with this film is the fact that "love isn't enough to have a successful marriage." At the end of the film, it is clearly shown that Charlie (Adam Driver) and Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) are still in love with one another, but it is also shown in this film that both parties have better lives when they are not together. In fact, they are better as co-parents than as parents.

At the end of the film, I realized that marriage is really a partnership. It won't be fulfilling if both parties aren't there for each other, empowering one another, or even supporting each other in their different endeavors. Love is just another portion of the chemistry, but trust, appreciation, faithfulness, and fun are also part of it.

Lastly, it made me realize that having kids or having long years of marriage isn't enough reason to settle for someone for a lifetime. It is not too late to let go and rebuild yourself. Sometimes, if we want to become who we aspire to be, we must reconstruct our habits and get out of our comfort zone. As the saying goes, "familiarity breeds contempt." We need something or someone that will make us feel alive for the rest of our lives, not just a temporary driving force of fun or an abrupt dopamine hit.
