Tochi.
“Wake up, my friend!!” Chidera, my elder sister, shouted angrily as she spanked my butt harshly.
“Ooh, Dera, allow me sleep… just one more minute,” I grumbled, tossing and turning on my bed.
“My friend, if you don’t get up, I will pour this water on you!” she threatened.
“Ehn!!” I shrieked, jumping out of bed, fully awake now, knowing exactly what my elder sister was capable of.
“Where’s the water?” I asked cautiously.
“There’s no water, spoilt brat,” she said with a smug grin. “I just said that to wake you up. Hurry and meet us in the parlour for morning devotion.”
“Oh God!! Dera, you wicked ooh. I was enjoying such sweet sleep, and you had to come with that your ugly face to wake me. Do you know I was dreaming of…” I wailed.
“Will you shut up, my friend!! Who are you talking to like that? Ngwa, before I blink, you better vamoose from here osiso. Sleeping beauty, Onye ala!” she boomed.
Sluggishly, I made my way to the parlour to meet Bro Ikenna and Papa. After greeting them, I sat close to my dad—I’m a daddy’s girl.
I deliberately stayed far from Mama, knowing that if she noticed I was still sleepy, her hands—hardened from endless weeding—would strike the sleep right out of me.
A few moments later, Mama and Chidera joined us. After reciting the Rosary and psalms—our parents are staunch Catholics—morning devotion ended.
“Ehen, Tochukwu nwam, I’m so happy you’re starting your second year in senior secondary today. You’ve always made this family proud. Your last term results say it all. I want you to continue like this—and if possible, do even more. Inugo, nwam?” Papa said, clearing his throat.
“I’ve heard you, Papa. You know I can’t let you down,” I replied.
“Tochim, I hope you listened to your father. Avoid bad friends. Don’t give in to peer pressure. And most importantly, no relationship should distract you from your books, do you hear me? Your elder sister finished SS3 last term. Soon she’ll write JAMB and leave for university. She won’t always be there to look after you.”
Papa then turned to my elder brother.
“Ikenna nwam, when are you going back to the city?”
“I leave tomorrow, Papa. I’ll get my things ready today,” he replied.
“Brother, that’s too soon! You haven’t even stayed a week,” I complained, stomping my foot.
“Tochi, I need to check on my business. Don’t worry, I’ll settle you before leaving. I nugo?” he placated.
“Brother!! Are you trying to bribe me? Well, I’m not accepting anything less than twenty thousand oo,” I said, hiding a grin.
“Will you shut that mouth and leave, Anuofia?” Mama scolded, raising her hand, making me scamper for safety.
“Yenyenyen,” Mama mimicked.
“Better go and prepare for school. Infact, Ikenna, you are not giving that girl any money,” Mama commanded.
“Just give it to me; I’ll hold it for her,” Chidera offered—earning a bombastic side-eye from Mama.
“Ehmm… I’ll go prepare for the shop,” Chidera said, scratching her head nervously.
“No oo! Don’t collect money on behalf of your sister now,” Mama retorted sarcastically.
“You and your father are spoiling these girls, especially Tochukwu. At my age, I didn’t even know what money was… Oh, children nowadays!!” she nagged.
🌷🌷Few hours later🌷🌷
“Mummy, I’ve finished preparing for school,” I announced, picking up my bag.
“Hmm, nwam m ji eme onu, Omalicha m. You’re looking beautiful this morning oo. Mgbeke sewed your uniform well—you look good,” Mama praised.
“Thank you, Mama,” I blushed.
“Oya, take this money for your snacks. And remember to meet me at the shop on your way home so I can give you foodstuffs for dinner. Your sister will be leaving for JAMB lessons by 3 pm,” she said, untying her wrapper to hand me some money.
“Okay, Mama. Thanks for the money. Sell market well oo. I’ll meet you at the shop after school,” I smiled, stepping out of the compound.
