Jain

August 7, 2012

"Declan, you are welcome to take pictures of anyone else." Tenielle says.

"No. How many times will I go to the mall for the first time with my girlfriend? Once."

"And we'll never come as boyfriend and girlfriend again if you don't stop."

Caitlyn and Samuel hiss. Declan puts down his camera.

"Hey, you're more than welcome to take pictures of me." Rob says.

I smile at Rob.

"Me too."

"Jain you're in every picture ever." Caitlyn complains.

"Imagine growing up with her." Samuel says.

"It's not my fault, I'm incredibly photogenic."

"Prove it." Caitlyn bets.

"Alright." I sit down in front of the fountain.

Declan looks at Tenielle. She shrugs and he picks up his camera.

"Cross eyed." Samuel says.

I obey and Declan snaps the picture.

"Tongue out." Rob commands.

Again.

"Pig snout." Caitlyn giggles.

Again.

"Puppy eyes." Tenielle laughs.

"We're trying to prove something here, Tenielle." Rob sighs.

"You'll need a cute one to compare."

They all nod.

"Join us." A woman says, coming up to us.

"Um," Tenielle says, looking at us.

"Join you where?" I ask.

"My apologies. I thought you saw me coming from all that commotion. We are hosting a couple event." She says, pointing.

I stand and follow her. The group follows me.

"It's a contest to see who can lift their partner the longest."

"And the prize?" Caitlyn asks.

"Movie tickets to two movies for the couple."

"No offense, I'm not doing that." Tenielle says.

"Well we are." Rob says, grabbing Samuel and walking into the contestants.

"Jain?" Caitlyn asks.

"Sure. Why not?"

The woman gathers a few more people.

"You got me?" Caitlyn asks.

"And go." She calls.

I pick her up.

Rob starts whistling.

"You're such a cheat." Caitlyn says.

"He doesn't need to cheat. I got him." Samuel says.

"Like how you had Jain at your Dirty Dancing practice last week?"

"I was getting over a cold."

"Sure." Caitlyn mocks.

"Don't you guys think Declan is making enough of a spectacle taking pictures of us?" I ask to get them to shush.

"Fine." All three say together.
