My heart raced, and apprehension crept in. Ronan, Vivian, and Vincent were here, ensuring that everything would be alright. Yet, despite their presence, this was still a new experience for me, and I couldn't help but feel nervous.
Ronan rose to his feet and returned with the woman, appearing precisely as she had in the photograph. Her features were just as they were before, only now she had donned a grey overall. He set her down and secured her with a pair of handcuffs attached to a metal plate on the table.
"Ozara, this will be your final hearing before your sentence. I offer you to speak truly, we will know otherwise, and your punishment will be more severe." Ronan told her. She franticly looked around, a scared look in her eyes. "You can't do that. I already got my sentence. I'm innocent." She said in a panicked voice.
"This isn't a human facility. You'll learn pretty fast we do things outside the grid here. What matters now is my opinion. We will start we the questions now."
"No, this is kidnapping. I'm not telling you anything-"
"Silence!" Ronan roared, making me shut my unopened mouth. Cleo got just as quiet. "Were you with your kids the day they were left in the car?"
"No. I don't know how they got there or who drove them. I was just nearby by coincidence." This was a lie. "You're lying," I told her. She snapped her gaze at me. "How would you know? You weren't there." Ronan tapped the table. "You won't speak unless spoken to." She got quiet again.
"Ronan, can I give further instruction to make the entire ordeal go faster?" Ronan nodded. I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote what I wanted Cleo to say. I passed her the paper. "Read it out loud, don't stop in the middle." She nodded. "You better follow those instructions to the ream," Ronan told her with a voice that made me tremble.
"I was driving my kids that day, left them in the car, and went out to make an earned. When I came back, they were dead." She finished reading, her face going paler with each new word. "It's the truth. She did it." I told Ronan, who had an impressed look on his face. "Good idea, it sure saves us some time."
He took a stack of documents from her file and started to write on it. "I, Ronan James, sentence you, Cleo Ozara, to 75 years in the Outstretch prison. 25 years for each child you killed. You will provide blood service in your time as a prisoner. The decision is irreversible and was verified by witch Julian Lewis."
She tried to open her mouth to argue, but Ronan silenced her. He took her out and came back after a minute with another file. I felt good knowing they were putting guilty people away. That woman robbed her children of their life and walked freely as if nothing had happened. It also was nice that Ronan and Vivian had so much trust in me.
"You did good. I didn't think you had it at you. Glad I was wrong." I didn't know if I should take it as a compliment or an insulant, so I just said, "Thanks." We kept going like that, interviewing additional ten people. One guy was telling the truth when he said he wasn't guilty, and Ronan put his case back into investigation. It felt good helping him, knowing he won't rot here for nothing.
"Ronan, what are you doing with people when they are proven innocent or finish their sentence? Won't they remember the supernatural word?"
"We alter their memories using vampires with mental gift. So they won't remember anything or will remember serving their time in a human prison. We also give them a supernatural parole officer to monitor them. They won't know the difference." I nodded at his answer. They thought about everything.
"Well done Julian. It really is fascinating to see you in action" Vivian entered the room with Vincent. "We're done for today. Let me treat you both to dinner. I have something I would like to discuss with you."
