Part 13: Love's to Blame

Start from the beginning

"Kiera, listen to me. You're honoring the phrase: "see something, say something." You know that Intelligence takes domestic, abuse, and cases involving children very seriously. So, you're doing the right thing by calling the shots." Hailey said.

"I'll keep my eyes peeled and give you updates." Kiera said.

"You sound like an Intelligence CI." Hailey told her.

"Is it too much trouble to ask if we can keep this between us?" Kiera asked.

Hailey thought for a quick second before answering her.

"I'm sorry, but this is not one of those times where we can keep this to ourselves. I will have to bring it up to the team when you can confirm that it is escalating. If it makes you feel better, I'll handle your Dad." Hailey explained.

"Okay, I understand. Thank you for letting me talk to you about this." Kiera said.

"Of course, you're welcome to call me anytime. Get some rest, K." Hailey said, then hung up the call.

After that, Hailey nor Kiera could sleep that night because of the thought of another abuse case occurring. They both know how it feels, but it hurts that they can't stop every single one out there.

It's Friday morning and Kiera was packing up her backpack for the classes she had that today. She looked out the window and see two people arguing. She realizes that it's Cheyanne and Eric, and it looks like they're getting into a fight!

Kiera doesn't hesitate to go out to her car to drive to the 21st District. It doesn't start, so she has no choice but to run before it's too late. She tries to call Jay, but he doesn't pick up.

Jay and Hailey are in his truck, watching out for the suspects they're trying to catch for their current case. They're waiting for Hank to give the signal before they can move in. When they notice the suspect go down an alley, Jay and Hailey hear their Sergeant's signal and they get out of the truck.

The second they leave is when Jay's phone starts ringing on the console. It's the ringtone he has set for Kiera. It rung until it went to voicemail since Jay wasn't there to answer it. About five minutes later, the two of them get back into Jay's truck. He grabs his phone from the console and it turns on with a notification coming through.

"Huh, looks like Kiera called." Jay said.

"Good job, Captain Obvious." Hailey said.

Jay rolled his eyes, then saw Hank in his peripheral vision. The two of them got out of the truck again and meet up with the team. Hank was briefing them on what happened on the scene and gave out orders to conduct evidence.

Kiera was still running when she stopped for a moment to catch her breath. She looked down the street to see a group of people standing in a circle and realized it was the CPD Intelligence Unit. So, she runs over to the them.

"DAD! HELP!" Kiera yelled to get their attention.

Everyone in Intelligence looked to their left to see the frantic, young girl coming their way. Kiera ran to Jay and crashed into his side.

"Kiera! What are you doing here?" Jay asked, immediately going down to her level.

"Did you run all the way from campus?" Vanessa asked.

"Yes...I had...no choice." Kiera said in between breaths.

"What's wrong, kid?" Hank asked.

"I...need...help. Cheyanne, abuse-" Kiera said, still panting for breath.

"Oh no." Hailey softly said to herself.

"What?" Jay questioned to his partner.

"I'll explain later." Hailey stated.
