Of Minotaurs and Men

"Now, many say Odysseus was a hero. He was greatly favored by the goddess Athena and hated by Poseidon."

Y/n's leg bounced anxiously as her mythology continued talking.

"Does anyone know why Poseidon hated Odysseus?" the older man questioned, his eyes scanning the crowd of bored teenagers. "Anyone?" Nothing. "That's right! Because Odysseus blinded one of Poseidon's sons, Polyphemus." The teacher threw on an excited face as he spoke, desperately searching for some excited teen. "You're probably wondering now, who is Polyphemus? Well, I'm going to tell you!"

As the old man continued talking, Y/n's eyes fell to her computer. The screen was dark, awaiting for notes or some sort of attention. She tapped the space bar and stared blankly as the screen lit up, showing the basic screensaver.

"-What do you think, y/n?"

The voice awoke her from her bored trance.

"What?"

"I asked, 'what other sort of adventures did Odysseus and his crew go on?' " The teacher stared expectantly at the girl. She blinked at him, racking her brain for some sort of answer. She quickly scanned the crowd of students, until her eyes landed on one of her classmates, Dani, she knew them as. They were her only friend in the class and very luckily sat directly across from her.

She was absentmindedly scribbling away on their notebook. Y/n cleared her throat loudly, causing Jonah to look up at her. They gave her an annoyed look. "Odysseus... went to..." She looked at the teen pleadingly. 

"Oh my god," she quietly groaned before scribbling something on the notebook. 

"One second," Y/n said, throwing the teacher a quick smile. She cringed at his now annoyed face.

"No, it's fine, maybe I should call on Jonah instead-"

"Cersei!" Y/n exclaimed quickly, reading the page Jonah had showed her.

"What about her?" The teacher pinched the bridge of his nose. "What did she do to Odysseus?"

"Um..."

Jonah mouthed something, causing Y/n to give her a strange look. 

"Pig...?" Y/n stared at the teen in confusion. Jonah rolled their eyes and placed her head on the table in front of them.

"Uh huh."

"Do you need a lifeline?" the teacher questioned. 

"Well, I obviously know what Cersei did and how she was involved in the story of Odyssey-"

"Odysseus-"

"-but I think Jonah should explain it to you, since you seem so very confused. Dani?" 

"Right, because you're asking us so many questions, you quite obviously do not know what she did," Jonah continued, sending the teen a scowl. "Cersei turned a bunch of Odysseus' scouts into pigs and so Odysseus went to save them. Hermes gave him a special herb that protected him, Odysseus, from Cersei's magic. Cersei was so impressed with Odysseus that she turned his men back into... well, men and also, fell in love with him."

"Correct, Dani," the teacher said. "Thank you for so graciously explaining that to me."

"You're very welcome, Mr. Till," Jonah stated, giving Y/n a sarcastic smile.

Then, the bell rang. "Looks like your all quite literally saved by the bell," Mr. Till said. "Lucky for you guys. But be prepared for a quiz when you return to class."

"I already did it," Jonah whined to herself, causing Y/n to throw them a look. "Yes, I'm that bitch." Jonah shrugged.

"Thank you for the save Jonah," she said, pulling on her bag.

"It's not like I had a choice," they scoffed. "But it was honestly painful watching you struggle so much."

"Ahahaha." Y/n laughed sarcastically as the two exited the small classroom. "What are your plans for lunch? Cafeteria food or eat out?"

"Eating out sounds nice," Jonah admitted as they walked. "But I'm flat broke and my parents revoked my driving privileges." She cringed at the thought. "Plus, I planned on spending lunch with Taylor." 

Y/n let out a hum of understanding. Jonah and Taylor were some of her closet friends in the school but they were a fairly affectionate couple so being around them could tend to be... draining for the single girl. 

"You don't mind if I join you, do you?" Y/n asked Jonah as they entered the crowed cafeteria. 

"Not at all, we never do," Jonah stated, smiling warmly at the girl. "Plus, we're eating buddies, remember?" They nudged Y/n gently. 

"Right." 

Jonah and Y/n had been close since Y/n had started at the school. It was only a month but the two grew close due to overlapping schedules. Over the months they had discovered that they both shared an unhealthy relationship with food. Jonah rarely ate more than one meal a day and Y/n rarely ate outside of her own home. 

Eventually, they made a pack to eat lunch together when they could, so they could keep each other accountable. 

"How's stuff with your mom been?" Jonah questioned as the two joined the lunch line. Y/n cringed. "That bad?"

"She's trying to put us both on a new diet."

"Wow, mommy-daughter dieting." Jonah chuckled. "This is different than the keto?" 

"Oh yeah, keto was last month," Y/n snorted. "This one involves mostly veggie smoothies and 5 AM runs together." 

"Ew," Jonah frowned. 

"I know." 

Y/n's mother was a health obsessed and extremely overprotective woman. She hadn't always been that way, but after she discovered how many people teased Y/n at her old school, it got bad. She always told Y/n that she was just trying to better her life and self esteem, but her solution seemed to be weight loss. 

"Hey, Y/n?" Jonah's voice pulled Y/n from her trance. 

"Sorry, yeah?"

"You were spacing out so I grabbed you a sandwich," Jonah stated, handing Y/n said sandwich. 

"Heh, thanks."

"Wait- why did you go from a Greek myth, to your sophomore year of high school?" Dani questioned, making Y/n smile at her. 

"It's all just part of the story," she chuckled. 

"How long is this story?" 

"Do you want to keep listening and find out?" Y/n sassed, smirking at the younger teen. 

Dani rolled her eyes but remained silent. 

"Okay, now, our story is going to stay in sophomore year for just a bit longer."
