In a few months' time, the woman would turn thirty-fourth. She was standing on the balcony of a very pleasant but modest house gazing out over the blue Mediterranean with a somewhat enigmatic expression on her face. The house was located on one of the smaller of the Greek islands, less popular than many of the others for it boasted no fancy restaurants or places of entertainment, and that suited the woman fine.

She was a widow but no longer used her married name; she had reverted to her maiden name to avoid unwelcome notoriety. She was wealthy but refrained from any ostentation; she was only recently bereaved and was seeking tranquillity and obscurity.

Yet she was attractive and you couldn't help but wonder if she would find another partner to share her future life with.
