"Sexy, yes, but my family's going to think I hired a stripper to be my date."
"And that's a bad thing?"
"The hiring part, yes."
"You wouldn't care if I was a stripper?" Levi doesn't answer that; he feels like it's a trap. "Ever been to a strip club?" you continue when he doesn't answer.
"No," he replies. "Are you? A stripper?"
"Yeah, every Monday and Friday night." He stares at you, trying to figure out if you're kidding, and you look to him, rolling your eyes. "Kidding. But it'd be a great way to pay for school."
"I've heard how much some of the idiots in class throw away at strip clubs," Levi mutters. "Definitely."
You pinch at the fabric, twisting and turning in the mirror, and Levi realizes he's got to get you out of that dress before he starts having some sort of physical reaction. Shit- that's not what he meant. He needs you to get out of it- not him to get you out of it. Yeah. That's it. "So," you say, turning to face him with your hands on your hips. "No red?"
"Unless you want my stepfather's asshole friends staring at your chest all night, no."
"Yeah, I could do without that." You reach a hand over your shoulder, trying to reach for the zipper. "Could you- could you help me undo this?" you call. "It's- you know what, I think I can get it, don't bother-"
Levi stands and crosses the room to get to you, because the sooner that dress is off, the sooner he can get blood back to his brain. "I've got it," he mutters, fingers finding the zipper on your dress and sliding it low enough for you to reach.
For a moment, he pauses. He's got this sudden urge to kiss the back of your neck.
What the hell is wrong with him- Levi lets go and turns, making his way back to his seat while you squeak out your thanks and vanish behind the dressing room curtain.
A few more dresses come and go and Levi does his best to not pay too much attention- obviously, he's seen what happens when he pays too much attention- and if you notice his sudden withdrawal, you don't say anything about it. You seem content though; you've got this light in your eyes that he hasn't seen before.
And it's working well, his attempt to avoid paying attention to you, until he hears you gasp and then go quiet. No other sounds, nothing. Are you okay? "You okay?" Levi calls.
"I think this is it," he hears you say, not very loudly.
You found a dress. He's not sure whether he expected it to take longer or not, but either way, he's surprised at how he straightens up in anticipation. "Found it?" Levi asks.
Quiet for another moment, then, "yeah, this is it. Oh my god, this is perfect."
"Don't hide it from me, then."
Still, you don't come out right away. Levi waits, fingers drumming on the arm of the chair until finally, the curtain is pulled back and you step out, smiling sheepishly.
The dress is dark green- a rich, forest green that he hasn't seen you try on yet. It shimmers under the light, tiny gems embedded in a mesh layer over the dress. The sleeves are made up of that same mesh, ending at your wrists. It goes down to below your knees, but not quite your ankles.
It's nice. It's really nice, actually, and it suits you. "Well?" you ask timidly, looking to the mirror. He watches as your face lights up as you see yourself again.
The look on your face makes him want to smile. "Twirl," he says, for some stupid reason he can't understand.
You spin in a circle and the skirt extends slightly, swirling around you, shimmering under the light. You laugh, a rich sound, and you say, "this is the best thing I've ever worn in my life. And it matches the necklace from yesterday!"
