Maya Zoja is a Ishvalan killer with a reputation of killing her targets without mercy and tearing their heads. Maya Zoja is the granddaughter of an Ishvalan refugee that escaped the Ishval Civil War in 1901 and moved to South Africa. Maya Zoja comes from a long family of feared and well respected Ishvalan warriors and fighters during the war. Sadly, all of Maya Zoja's relatives passed away and she is only one left.

In South Africa during the Ishval Civil War, the Ishvalans were facing extreme racism from the original natives of South Africa from the British colonials and royals. But the Boers, Dutch born South Africans, welcomed the Ishvalans as human beings. And the Ishvalan fought among side the Boers against the British armies. But when the Boers lost the war, the Ishvalans lost their rights and were forced to live in reservations in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

When Nelson Mandela became president of the Republic of South Africa, he ended the apartheid laws and everyone in South Africa now have legal rights including the Ishvalans.
Maya Zoja was only 18 when she was recruited into the Executive Outcomes, South African mercenary organization. Maya Zoja was very tough and was a very hardened fighter because no matter how many times she was beaten, shot, or stabbed, Maya Zoja never gave up and she was very strong to lift machine gun and several other weapons.

Maya Zoja serviced in the Angola, Sierra Leone, Syria, Chechnya, Georgia, Somali, Burma, and Nigeria. Fighting against insurgents and terrorists in many shapes and sizes.

When Maya Zoja is not fighting someone, she would practice alchemy and how to create a philosopher stone. In the Ishvalan tradition, Maya Zoja shouldn't be performing alchemy because the Ishvalan religion forbidden them to create a philosopher stone and the stone will make them greedy and lust for power.

Maya Zoja was very skilled alchemist because she was able to combat anyone with alchemy from creating barricades to weapons to kill. But Maya Zoja's goal was performing human transmutation, the ability to bring human beings back to life and the power of God.
Why would Maya Zoja wants to perform a human transmutation? The reason why is to resuscitate love ones back from death. Maya Zoja was tried of living and being alone for many years and she been trying to bring one family back from death but every attempt failed. Maya Zoja been studying alchemy and practicing performing human transmutations.

Someone visited South Africa to do some hunting for big game and recruit a some new member of a notorious organization of murderous assassins. That someone is Hanyu Zhengwen.

Maya Zoja was assigned to patrol the South African-Angolan borders until someone or something attacked her base. The alarm went off and several Angolan rebels attempted to cross the border. Maya Zoja's comrades took down several rebels but one escaped into the darkness and Maya Zoja pursued the rebel. It was very dark and reports came to all border bases that savanna is filled with murderous lions and hyenas.

As Maya Zoja ventured deeper into the wilderness, she was viciously attacked by the rebel and he knocked her weapons out of her hands. Just as the Angolan was about smash Maya Zoja's head with a rock, she pulled out her Bowie knife and viciously stabbed the rebel in the eye socket. Maya Zoja then stabbed the rebel several more times in the head, throat, and eyes.

After the brutal killing, Maya Zoja just realized she alone in the savannah with wild animals everywhere, especially lions. The only thing Maya Zoja is armed was her Bowie knife and Glock 18 pistol. A little pistol isn't enough to stop an attacking lion or a charging rhinoceros. What she needs a miracle to escape and get back to base camp. The only thing Maya Zoja can do is make a fire and camp until daylight and make a makeshift spears.

Falling asleep, in the savannah, will get any animal or human killed but Maya Zoja, foolishly, fell asleep. When morning came, Maya Zoja woke up, surprisingly, surrounded by three massive hungry lions. Maya Zoja couldn't do nothing, she frozen in fear. But someone saved Maya Zoja just as the lions were gonna attack. A man, armed with Remington hunting rifle, rushed in and killed one lion and the others ran away.
His name was Hanyu Zhengwen and he was hunting big games in South Africa but he was also hunting for a new member of his organization and he just founded Maya Zoja. Hanyu Zhengwen wanted Maya Zoja to join his organization for one reason: for her beauty.

Maya Zoja turned it down because she unable to leave her position or desert her post. But Hanyu Zhengwen gave her the bad news: the Angolan rebels destroyed the base and murdered of her comrades. Maya Zoja was now alone and can't stand seeing more comrades being killed in senseless ways. So Maya Zoja agreed to join Hanyu Zhengwen.

Maya Zoja was leaving South Africa and heading to Russia to fight in another battle but this time she'll be fighting for her life.

The Second Battle of Moscow has begun with 710,000 Shadow soldiers fighting the U.N. Coalition street by street, building by building, and room by room. Maya Zoja's platoon was defending a story apartment complex from Russian, American, French and South African armies. Maya Zoja was armed with a modern assault rifle while her comrades were armed with WWI, WWII, Korean, and Vietnam era weapons. From bolt action rifles to Vietnam era machine guns. And not many were trained assassins.

U.N. assaulted the apartment again but this time, they brought two heavy tanks and Maya Zoja's platoon didn't have an antitank weapons. Many comrades were slaughtered and there was no mercy given. Maya Zoja was the only survive but her platoon was destroyed. But Maya Zoja manage to save one comrade, who was a Hawaiian, from death. Her name Kala Makaha, a murderous assassin, and Maya Zoja saved her from a tank blast.

Moscow was a lost cause and thousands of brave Shadow soldiers lost their lives fighting for a doomed uprising. Why didn't Maya Zoja use her alchemy to stop the U.N. tanks? It's because Hanyu Zhengwen believed that if the U.N. Coalition capture Maya Zoja, they'll interrogate her on how she use alchemy.

Instead, Maya Zoja escaped with Kala Makaha and 15 other comrades an many wanted revenge in Hanyu Zhengwen for leaving thousands of brave comrades to their graves.

Hanyu Zhengwen's assassination was completed + Huang Shun ended the Children of Shadows + The creation of Los Diablos= Maya Zoja becomes the sixtieth member.
