Vance Hopper had always been familiar with fear, from those around him to his own personal experiences. Fear had been a lifelong companion of the Hopper boy.

Everywhere he went, he would notice the cautious and fearful looks of those around him. Penelope was no different, he had noticed her hesitation and frightened state right off the bat.

But, as of right now, fear was nowhere to be seen on the brunette's face. There is only one emotion evident in the Caytes girl.

What is it, you might ask?

Rage

Vance knew the facial expression all too well. He studied her through his mangy mop of blond curls.

He noticed her glazed-over eyes, tears evident in them, and the sharp hisses coming from the brunette as she rubbed a frozen pudding cup that she got from her lunch box on her nose, the bruising already beginning.

He would be lying if he said he didn't feel bad for punching the Caytes girl in the face.

" What?" Penelope narrowed her eyes, turning to look at him."Didn't your parents ever tell you that it's rude to stare?" She huffed, looking forward.

Correction: He didn't feel as bad for punching her in the face...

"Bitch" He whispered under his breath, sulking into his chair.

" Excuse m- "

The door to the principal's office opened before Penelope could nag the boy any further. " Caytes, Hopper, My office, NOW!"

' Why am I always getting interrupted?' She stood up, making her way towards the mahogany door, pudding in hand.

The Hopper boy follows shortly behind...

"This is ridiculous!?!" Penelope screamed, storming through the principal door." I am the victim here!?" She added, earning an eye roll from the blond behind her.

She and the Hopper boy had just spent the last 15 minutes getting scolded by their principal, which ended with a week of at-home suspension.

"This is going on my record for sure." She frowned, thinking about how this event would affect her getting into college in the future.

"S'not the end of the world." He stiffened, the cool air nipping at his bare arms. He started to regret wearing his signature jean vest, shoving his hands in his pocket.

" Are you kidding me!?!"

"It's a huge deal because unlike you, I want to be somebody and get out of this shit town." She rambled, not processing what she said to the already pissed-off blond.

"The fuck does that mean?" He scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest.

" I didn't mean it like that." She pinched the bridge of her nose with a sigh.

" Whatever." He huffed, bumping the shoulder of the brunette before taking his leave.

Penelope quickly realized the effect on which her words had on the boy. Penelope wasn't usually like that. However, when it comes down to her future, she becomes very serious.

She wanted to apologize to Vance because when she was younger, she was taught that grudges weren't meant to be held. But, how would she get on the Hopper Boys' good side again...

"Bingo!"

Penelope didn't care much for the Grab n' Go, as she didn't have many friends to hang out with, or in general. She mainly went there for groceries and magazines.

But, unlike Penelope, Vance Hopper loved the Grab n' Go, but not in the way you'd think. There was a sole reason that anyone would ever see Vance there, and that was for...

The Quican Pinball machine.

If you couldn't find the Hopper boy beating someone up, you could surely find him trying to beat his high score at the machine. Hence, the nickname...

"Pinball Vance".

Penelope still felt guilty for what she said to the boy earlier, so she went home and gathered all her saved-up quarters, and stuffed them into a bag, to give to him as an apology.

So, here she was, at the kid-infested Grab n' Go, searching for a particular blond.

She spotted the boy in his usual spot in front of the pinball machine, a small crowd surrounding him.

She had to admit, he was pretty good.

She sat on a stool nearby and watched as he focused on the tiny metal ball inside the machine. She was there for a good 20 minutes, watching the boy, waiting for the crowd to dissipate.

" Shit!" Vance cursed, jerking the machine... He ran out of quarters.

" Lovely!" Penelope muttered with a smile, strolling over to the boy,
quarters in hand.

"Shit, shit, shit" Penelope heard him murmur, fishing his pocket for any spare change. Penelope stood there for a good minute before clearing her throat. This made Vance look up in annoyance, his features softening a bit as he saw Penelope in front of him.

" Um- Here," She shoved the baggie of coins toward him before he could say something. " It's for earlier...Sorry." She told him, rubbing the nape of her neck. The Hopper boy just stared at the brunette, suspicion prominent on his face. No one ever apologized to him, not on their own account that is.

Let alone give him a gift...

"You have the rest of your life to be a jerk, just take the coins." She quipped, still waiting for him to take the bag.

"Thanks." He whispered, before taking the bag and inserting a coin into the machine.

Penelope didn't expect the boy to thank her, nor did she care if he did. She continued to stand by the boy watching as he continued on with his game. " you really are good." She mentioned.

" I know." he puffed, a smirk playing on his.

She laughed at his response, before looking down at her wristwatch.

"It's getting dark ... I should get going, see you next week for our tutoring session, yeah?" She questioned, waiting for the boy's answer.

" yeah... see you next week." he looked up at the brunette, a small smile taking over his face.

She gave him a toothy grin, before exiting the small store.

' Have his eyes always been that blue?'
