September'76
Penelope was fond of the rain. She liked the soft pitter-pattering against her window, The cold front that came with the fresh rain, and just the solacing feeling of it.
Correction.
Penelope used to be fond of the rain. That was until she found herself sprinting to school in the pouring rain.
She swore from this day forward never to trust an alarm clock again.
The Caytes girl wouldn't be caught dead running late to school. She had always taken pride in her timeliness
It's not that she enjoyed school or anything, to tell you the truth, Penelope had hated school all her life.
But, she saw how hard her dad worked to keep her fed and a roof over their heads. He worked long hours and looked exhausted beyond belief every time he got off of work. Penelope didn't like seeing her dad like this, so she vowed to do something with her life. That way she could take care of her father as he does for her.
So here she was, Scurrying down the hall of her school, 15 minutes late to class and soaked from head to toe. The squelching of her wet sneakers echoed throughout the empty halls.
She quickly entered the classroom, making a beeline for her line.
" Nice of you to finally join us, Ms. Caytes."
Penelope's face paled at the sound of her teacher's voice. She turns, meeting her teacher's face.
"Sorry, sir," was all she managed to say. The Snickers from her peers flooded her ears.
Penelope never sought to be the center of attention. She preferred to stay on the sidelines and watch others.
She had always thought of herself as a good people watcher.
" I'll let you off with a warning, but don't let it happen again," Her teacher warned.
"Alright...?"
She gave a short nod before taking her seat.
The lesson soon resumed, the chatting dying down with it.

"That's all for today's class." The teacher announced.
Penelope already felt drained, she took a glance at her wristwatch.
"10:43"
She sighed, thinking about the long day ahead of her, absent-mindedly heading towards the door.
"Penelope, can I talk to you real quick?" She heard, turning around to see her teacher at his desk.
" Yes, Mr. Binns?" Penelope said, clutching her bag that was still damp from this morning.
" I was wondering if you could do me a small favor?"
The question, made the girl stiffen. She didn't know what the man in front of her would say.
" You're one of the brightest kids in my class in your year if in being honest," He admitted." I need you to tutor one of your classmates." He said, shuffling the paper's on his desk.
This caught the brunette's attention, She never saw herself as the type of person to tutor another, But she knew better than to turn down the offer.
She could always use the extra credits...She needed those credits.
" Of course, but if you don't mind me asking...who?" Her brows creased with curiosity
"Vance Hopper." He said indifferently.
Penelope felt her heart drop to her ass.
