Going to the coast—where sirens resided, excuse you—was pretty much asking for death, but to the prince, he didn't care.
He sat on the docks, his feet swaying in the cold, salty water. The ocean was merciless and full of surprises, which is why he always brought a flintlock revolver with him every time he went to the seashore, although he barely saw even a hint of a siren around.
Well, until now.
A figure swam through the waves, and the prince knew it couldn't be a human, because no one would swim through siren-infested waves, hell, it didn't even look human!
Without a second thought, the prince stood up, took out the revolver and aimed at the waters. The figure swam closer to the docks, and when its pretty little head shot up from the water, he aimed at the head and pulled the—
"Please don't hurt me!" the siren exclaimed, terrified.
The prince blinked, lowering the gun but not his guard.
"You- you can talk?!" the prince exclaimed back, to which the siren only nodded its head frantically, its dark eyes stuck on the gun, watching it carefully to make sure its head won't be blown off.
"Are you..planning to hurt me?"
"What? No, no, that's not what I wanted to do at all!"
"Then why are you here? Do you even know the risks of being seen here?"
"I-I thought the shore was empty!" The siren swam forward, to which the prince raised the gun to its head.
"Not another inch! Or I'll turn you into room decoration," he seethed, the creature whimpering and backing away.
"I'm sorry.."
Once the prince got a good look at it, his face flushed. It had long hair, probably around waist-length, he guessed. Its skin was a sickly gray and its tail blended in with the murky water.
It was beautiful.
The prince shook these thoughts out of his head, because why the hell would he adore some monster? He lowered his gun once again and stared down at it.
"Go, get out of my sight. And never come back."
The siren immediately complied, dashing into the waters and swimming away. He put the revolver back in its holster, put on his boots and left. That was enough scenery for today.
—time skip—
After that encounter, the prince couldn't sleep at night. He kept thinking about that day, why didn't he pull the trigger? Why did he let it go? Would he meet it again?
He didn't know, and he didn't plan to know.
He came back to the shore in the dead of night, sitting by the docks and admiring the starry sky. On nights he couldn't sleep, he'd stare at the sky until dawn came which was probably a bad habit because it always left him exhausted during the mornings. He soaked in the calm surroundings, sighing in relief.
Then he heard singing.
The words were incomprehensible and he felt himself falling into a trance. His consciousness faded in and out, and he swore that he wasn't standing last time he checked.
