"i'm at my place, are you okay, what's going on?" asked the now worried boy.
"i-i'm driving right now can you talk?"
"yeah of course. is this about... y'know you were all over the internet again yesterday right? about the gracie abrams stuff, what were you two doing in a bathroom together?"
charlotte shook her head, "she's my friend matthew. we've been friends for a couple weeks now, but it's complicated now because i think i... look my parents don't even know me and her are chill with each other, but this article came out among like hundreds of others saying my dad is pissed, and i don't know if it's true and god i don't even know what is going through their minds right now—"
"breathe," matthew chimed in through charlotte's excessive rambling.
she took a breath before continuing at a more relaxed pace, "i just don't know what to do. sadie told me yesterday gracie and i should like say to the world we're friends and not trying to kill each other and shit. but if i do that my parents would hate me. i don't even know what Jude would say or gracie's family. like she might get it worse than i would, i don't know."
matthew too a deep breath, "look charlie, to be honest... i don't trust her. she comes out of the blue from like years of you two hating each others families and you click like that? kinda weird."
"well i like her, i'm not being fake," charlotte said back rather defensively.
"yeah but you never know with an enemy right?" he chuckled. "but if i were you, i'd do the opposite of what sadie said. i know you, charlotte, the over the usual amount of attention you'll get for this, and not to mention the backlash and your parents anger if people find out you two are friends won't be good for your anxiousness or publicity."
charlotte huffed. she was now left completely conflicted; on one hand sadie is telling her to go public about her friendship with gracie to address the rumours, but matthew says otherwise, and not the mention the extra fucking hand that keeps slapping her in the face to remind her that she's starting to fall for gracie, and she can't help it.
the girl finally arrived at her apartment building, "thanks matthew, i'll- i'll think about it and stuff."
"okay. hey wait, why were you so... you sounded really off when you called and i answered did you want to tell me something or was something bothering you?"
charlotte paused, biting her tongue.
"uh-um no i'm fine. it was nothing," she lied, knowing she couldn't tell matthew about her new feelings given how he doesn't even trust gracie to begin with. "i'll see you later though, bye."
"okay, bye."

she was doing anything to avoid the thought of it, endlessly scrolling through pinterest, watching netflix, reading, listening to anyone's music but hers. but it wouldn't work. charlotte threw herself onto her bed, staring at her phone as she tapped onto instagram.
and of course this was the first post she saw.

charlotte couldn't believe what she was reading, she sat with her eyebrows forrowed and kept on scrolling. if was endless hate with only sprinkles of love, mostly from her freinds and fans, but it was all mainly alex stan's shitting on her or sadly people who were invested in the abram's and parker's feud...
but charlotte couldn't take her eyes off the caption either. and the picture. she felt this overwhelming hurt in her chest, seeing that gorgeous girl in the post who was already struggling face even more backlash. she sighed, her thumb hovering over the like button, though she knew she couldn't like it. because what other article would her single like produce?
she stared at the picture far too long than normal before tossing her phone aside and slamming her face into the pillow.
the fuck am i gonna do.
she was about to turn off the lights and go to bed to see if she could sleep this off, but was interrupted by her phone going off.
