' First Goodbyes. '

Eren gripped a shotgun and stood at the door, unflinching as zombies continued to bang at the door. Tears flooded Gabi's eyes, but she but her lip and stuck close to Falco. Reiner and Annie stood in front of the children like shields.

" On three, Eren! " Hange shouted, moving up to stand beside Eren. Levi stood on Eren's other side, Armin, Mikasa, Sasha, Jean, and Connie in a line behind them.

Zeke, Reiner, Porco, Pieck, and Annie made a line behind them. Falco and Gabi scooted in between Reiner, Zeke, Mikasa, and Armin. Only Floch still hid in his corner.

" Get up, Floch! You're part of this! " Jean snapped. Floch shook his head. " No! Let me die! "

" Let him die. " Eren repeated firmly. " It's up to him, not us. Count me down, Hange-San. "

Hange nodded. " 3.. 2... " the Scout Commander began their count. Everyone tensed, standing ready. Floch reluctantly joined the back of the group.

" 1!! "

At Hange's scream, Eren busted the door down and drove a bullet through the head of the zombie right in front of him. The group began to run, but suddenly, Armin yelped.

Annie gasped and looked back at him. A zombie was tugging at the blonde's arm, and Armin cried out desperately to be freed. Against everything she stood for, Annie rushed to help him.

Taking out a pocket knife she'd grabbed just in case, and cut with insane force through the zombie's arm. Armin leaped backward, and Annie drove her knife through the creature's head, her face contorting with disgust as her hand went into the zombie's head. Her knife poked out the other side, and as the zombie fell limp, Annie ripped her hand free and ran, frantically shaking the blood off her hand.

" Nasty... " The warrior muttered. " I'm sorry.. " Armin mumbled. Annie glanced at him and shifted closer. " Don't apologize. You can't control these wretched things. " She smiled slightly. Armin's cold terror faded, and his eyes warmed. " Thank you, Annie. "

" If you've quite finished, we've gotta go! " Connie yelled, shoving Armin's arm. Armin yelped in surprise and nodded at Annie, and they picked up the pace. Suddenly, a terrified screech came from the back of the group. Jean spun around, eyes wide. " Floch! "

 The group spun around, their jaws dropping, eyes widening, in horror. " He's getting devoured..! " Connie gasped. He grabbed Sasha's hand, and Jean's wrist, and gripped tight. Sasha squeezed Connie's hand back, and Jean shifted to stand behind the twins, hanging his arms around their shoulders.

But the zombies suddenly froze. Mikasa gasped as she realized something strange about Floch. The light in his eyes hadn't died entirely; it'd only dimmed. " He's a zombie! " She shrieked. Eren suddenly knocked into her back with a grunt and fired a gunshot at an approaching zombie. Levi shot down another one, and Hange smashed one's head in.

" That's all depressing and whatnot, but we're getting surrounded! " Porco yelled, working with Pieck to take down a larger zombie. Gabi shrieked as Reiner jumped to save her from a crawler by crushing its head in with his foot. Jean jumped into action, defending a frozen-with-shock Falco from a muscular-looking zombie. The Scout yelped as the zombie clawed his shoulder, but shot the creature down anyway. It fell to the floor with a sickening thud.

Porco scooped Falco into his arms, and Reiner carried Gabi as the group began to run again. They soon came across an empty hospital. After Eren, Mikasa, and Levi double checked that it was empty and killed off any remaining zombies inside, the group went in. They swiftly boarded up the doors, and Pieck took first shift watching in case any zombies broke in.

They all settled in, but were startled when there was a sudden thud from upstairs. Eren and Levi immediately stood up, while the rest glanced around from their seats. Sasha and Connie were kneeling beside Jean, who was groaning in pain.

" Forget that noise, help him! " Connie shouted. Falco stood miserably in a corner off to the side. Gabi was at his side, and they sunk to the floor. Gabi wrapped one arm around Falco's back and placed the other hand on his shoulder. " Falco.. "

" It's my fault..! " Falco cried, tears running from his eyes. " Jean's gonna die, and it'll be my fault..! "

Reiner rushed over, but footsteps were quickly approaching from the staircase. Eyes darting over, Falco gasped in mingled shock, relief, and joy, and before he could think, he ran toward the man who'd come down the staircase and tangled himself in the man's arms, letting a joyous cry escape his throat.
