"Ummm..." Nicholas looked at me, but I couldn't read his expression.
"Ummm...mom. Nicholas has other things to do." I told my mother with a small smile.
"No actually I can stay." Nicholas said. That surprised me. He wanted to stay?
"Excellent!" My mother exclaimed. "I'll start cooking. You can go ahead and continue what you were doing. What were you doing?"
"We were taking a break." I said. "We're gonna go back to work."
"Oh in that case, go up to your room. I'm going to be making a lot of noise in the kitchen and wouldn't want to disturb you." My mom said then she left to go in the kitchen, taking my dad's arm, dragging him along with her.
"Ok so... I guess we're going up to my bedroom." I said.
Turning around I started to pack up my books. While Nicholas stared into space at something peculiar.
"Why are you looking at my butt?..." I started to say.
Nicholas interrupted, " Woah! Don't flatter yourself. I'm looking at that picture of you, right there."
He pointed at the coffee table, where there was a picture of me.
"Oh. I was twelve there. It was my birthday." I said dully.
"Really? You don't look very happy." He commented, while packing up his books as well.
I turned around to look at him, " I wasn't."
"I have a feeling that, that has something to me."
"It does." I said. I turned to go upstairs.
"Oh well I'm sorry. I'm sorry I did all those things to you." He apologized as we walked up the long flight of stairs.
I sighed, " You think you can just apologize like that and I'll forgive you?"
"Yes." He said.
I stopped and he bumped into me. I turned around and faced him. Because I was on the stairs I was the same height as him, for once. I looked him straight in the eye.
"No?" He asked uncertaintly.
"Much better." I said.
"Ok how do I make it back up to you?" He asked.
"I don't know, Nicholas. Think of something." I said. I leaned back a bit because we were so close. I could smell his breath. It was very minty. Nice....
"Hmmm...I wanted to talk to you about that."
"About what?" I said puzzled.
"You keep calling me Nicholas."
"Well it is your name."
"Don't you get..." he paused, " Tired of saying yet."
"Hmmm...kind of."
"See, call me Nick like everyone else does. Well my baby sister doesn't call me that. She ummm... personalized it."
"Fine." I said leaning back again.
"Why are you leaning back? Does my breath reek?" He asked. He breathed into his hand and tried to smell his breath.
"No you breath smells fine. Its very minty." I said, my cheeks heating up.
"Thank you. So why are you leaning back?" He whispered coming even closer.
"Because we are so close." I whispered back, my eyes flickered to his lips and then back up to his eyes. I then realized he did the same.
He smiled and said, " Your breath smells like..chocolate. Like Hershey bars."
I blushed," I had one at lunch today."
His smiled widened and I cleared my throat and turned abruptly. That was very awkward. It was like we almost had a moment.
