"But you were so excited to get into your school," your mother says. She looks shell-shocked. "We- we moved you in. You accepted the offer."
"I paid extra to apply for engineering in the same school," you say, your voice shaking. "And I got in. That's the offer I accepted. I've been working at it for years."
"God damn," Ymir says appreciatively. "Didn't know you were smart as fuck."
"Language!" your grandmother hisses as some of your younger cousins gasp.
"Why would you..." your mother trails off. She looks genuinely bewildered. "Engineering? Why would you do that?"
"Because I like it," you say firmly (eh, not really, but you're not going to back down now). "And because I should be able to choose how I want to live my life, not have to- I shouldn't have to do what you want me to just because you think it's best! It's not!"
"So I'm a bad mother, then."
"If the shoe fits," Levi mutters behind you.
You think he was quiet enough that your mother couldn't hear him, but you're taking no chances, so you steamroll on. "You're not bad," you defend, even if it's halfhearted, "but you're- you're passive aggressive. You make me feel guilty if I don't want to do what you want me to do, and I've dreaded coming home for... for so long because of you."
There. It's out. It's out in the world, and you can't take it back. It's out there. You said it.
No one's responding to that. Your mother's staring at you, eyes wide and expression stupefied. "Is this why you never come home for summers?" your father speaks up. "Why you stay at school?"
When you nod, your mother scoffs. "So you don't come home because you don't like that we have dreams for you, that I want nothing but the best for you. When did you become so... entitled? When did you start going behind our backs?"
"I-" Fuck, you don't know what to answer first. "I don't come home because all you care about is when I'm going to get a boyfriend!" you snap. "What if- what if decided to date girls, huh? How'd you like that?"
"Levi probably wouldn't," Ymir mutters, and Hitch coughs to hide her laugh.
"Well, guess what," you say, lost in a rant that's been a long time coming, "I'm smart enough to be an engineer and I want to earn my own money. I don't want to have to be taken care of by a man. If he does end up making a shit ton of money? Fucking fantastic," you say, ignoring several gasps at your choice of language, "because that's just a damn bonus, not all he's good for."
There. Done. You don't want to see the consequences of your words, so you spin on you heel and turn towards the door. Levi opens it for you, your coat in his arms, and you stride by, out into the cold.
You hear the door shut behind you. Up ahead are Niccolo and Jean, both sitting in Levi's car, and they exit when they see you approaching. "Car warmed and ready!" Jean announces, patting the hood.
"So you had to sit in it?" Levi complains from behind you.
"This," Niccolo says, pointing from Levi to the vehicle, "is a nice car."
"I'm aware. It's mine."
"We just wanted to appreciate it!" Jean insists. "I'll never own anything this nice in my life."
"Definitely not, with the way you drive," you say.
"Hey!"
"Bags are in the back. Did you guys make it out okay?" Niccolo asks, glancing to you.
You shrug. "Not really."
"No?"
"She yelled," Levi says, moving around to the driver's side. "A lot. Well deserved," he adds as he slips into the vehicle, closing the door behind him.
