You clap your hand over your mouth. "Oh my god, I forgot about that."
He nods, looking to Levi. "Good on you for making it this far. I had at least two breakdowns my first time."
Levi glances at you. "Should I count it as a blessing that your mother hasn't asked when we're having kids yet?"
Niccolo and Jean nod vigorously. "She's too focused on how much money you have," you say with a shrug.
"I'll take it."
"So what's the plan?" Jean asks. "Just move your stuff into your car?"
You nod. "Yeah. Hoping for a speedy getaway."
Niccolo raises his hand in a high-five; Jean returns it. "We've got you."
The two of them get your bags; you check your phone to see a text from Hitch that the coast is temporarily clear. You follow Niccolo and Jean down the hallway and around a few corners until you've made it to the kitchen- and surprisingly, no one's there.
Thank you, Hitch and Ymir, you say to yourself as the four of you make it to the entryway. Jean and Niccolo had their boots at the door and were ready to put them on, so they head out quickly, door closing behind them. You start pulling your boots on, trying to be as fast as you can.
Unfortunately, you don't have as much luck as you thought you did. Someone enters the kitchen; you and Levi freeze. It's your uncle. "Hey," he says, looking to you. "You're up! Feeling better?"
Shit. Levi opens the door, and for a second, you think he's going to leave without you- he's got his boots and coat on and his car keys out of his pocket. But instead, he tosses his keys and calls, "get it warmed up," before he closes the door again. He gave his keys to Jean and Niccolo- he's not abandoning you.
He looks to you, and you smile weakly in relief. You look back to your uncle, wondering if you can still escape, but the damage has been done. Here comes your grandmother, some of your younger cousins, Hitch and Ymir (both mouthing 'sorry' to you) and yes, your parents.
Shit. So close yet so far. "You're up," your father says, relieved. "Feeling okay?"
"Up and heading out," your mother adds. "Are you sure it's a good idea? After yesterday?"
You're headed out, yes, but you're not coming back. You glance at Levi: he's got your coat in his arms and one hand on the doorknob. He raises his eyebrows at you, asking what you want to do.
You want to stand up for yourself, for once. That's what you want to do. But you're freaked out, still panicked, not quite sure what to say. Then, there's a hand on your arm. You blink yourself out of your thoughts to see Levi's eyes drilling into yours. "You can do it," he murmurs, voice quiet.
He's right. You can. And hell, do you want to. You pivot back to face your family, and you summon every last drop of your courage.
"I," you announce, "am getting an engineering degree."
And your family fucking stares.
In all fairness, the remark came out of nowhere. It's been a little tense lately, sure, but there's been nothing to indicate you'd announce something as random as the degree you're getting.
Your father is the first to speak. "You're dropping out of your business degree?"
You have to say it, have to get it out there- and for a second, you don't think you can, but then you glance back at Levi and he's nodding at you. Yes, you can. You can do this. "I never took a business degree in the first place," you get out. "I've been taking engineering since the beginning."
