8. it doesn't count during drinking games [minor nsfw]

Start from the beginning

Levi nods along. "All female cousins?"

"I haven't even finished telling you about all of them."

"Then get to it."

"I would've, but you interrupted."

"I did not."

You roll your eyes, sitting up. "Last but not least, a male cousin," you say, and now it's Levi's turn to roll his eyes. "Jean. He grew up next door to Marco, and no one can really say when they started dating, but they've been together forever."

"So your family's already met everyone here. No one is new."

"Yeah."

"No one except me."

"Yep."

"So I'm being thrown to the vultures."

"Absolutely."

"You're so nice to me."

"Oh, come on," you say teasingly. "Am I not the nicest fake girlfriend you've ever had?"

He's not smiling, but there's a lack of tension in his features that makes you think he's amused. "You've got some tough competition," Levi deadpans.

"But I'm in the lead," you joke, and you're cursing yourself in your head as you say it. Don't do this, don't imply you're interested, don't flirt, because you can't- this is all fake, and Levi doesn't like you like that, and maybe you don't even like him and you're just lonely. You don't know.

You don't understand your feelings very well, so that should mean putting a cap on anything that could be interpreted as flirting and treating this as strictly business, but Levi does the worst possible thing: he eggs you on. "Barely," Levi says, and he raises one hand, holding out his index finger and thumb with a tiny bit of space in between. "It's a close race."

You grin. "Low bar?"

"Low bar," Levi agrees, and he's smirking, "considering I've never had a girlfriend. But you've had a boyfriend," he continues.

You straighten up. Where's he going with this? "I have," you confirm.

"Did he meet your family?"

"No. Started dating him... spring of last year or something like that. It was only for a few months."

"And?"

"And what?"

"How's the race?"

You pretend to think. "Fake boyfriend is beating the ex boyfriend," you confirm, copying his action by pinching your index finger and thumb together and then separating them to make a tiny bit of space. "By a slim margin."

"We're winners," Levi says.

"We are," you agree. "More pros than cons."

"More pros than cons," he echoes.

The two of you stare at each other for a moment, Levi's small smirk mirroring your smile, and you think it's in that moment that you know you're screwed. You like him. Fuck. He's certainly being flirty enough that it could go both ways, but...

"Unpack, then dinner?" you suggest.

Levi nods, and you both move to your respective suitcases to unpack. Before you know it, your mother's knocking on your door and telling you that dinner's ready, and you and Levi have to go back out and face your family.

Dinner is spread out across the massive dining table, and you and Levi take seats closer to one of the ends to avoid being bombarded by most of your family. And like Levi did for you, you deflect as much as you can, taking the brunt of the questions- how was your time with Levi's family, how'd you meet, why haven't you mentioned him until now, and on and on and on.
