The smile on her face makes the last four days completely worth it. "I already know I'll love it," she says softly. "Thank you both."
She gives Levi one last hug, and then the two of you are out the door and in the car, which is already pulled up and packed with your luggage. And just like that, the two of you are off, leaving the gorgeous mansion behind and moving on to the next place.
"What about the dress?" you ask when Levi turns out of the driveway and onto the road.
"One of the staff is going to return it," he says as the car speeds up. "You liked it?"
"I loved it."
"Good." He glances at you. "Thank you. For the past few days."
His thank you is a bit awkward, but you'll take it. "Don't speak too soon," you warn him. "The worst is yet to come."
Levi rolls his eyes. "Yeah. Right."
"I'm serious. My family's crazy. And it's not going to be as professional as it was with yours- we're going to have to be cozier."
"We'll figure it out."
"We will, but I'm apologizing in advance."
"Unnecessary."
"Very necessary."
"You put up with my family," Levi says, taking a right turn, "so I can put up with yours. You can't possibly have anyone worse than Lovof."
You frown, pondering his statement. "No, but I think the collective annoying efforts of all my family combined has him beat."
"I'll believe it when I see it."
"Haven't we discussed your horrible eyesight?"
His eyes flicker to you again; he's smirking. You've completely forgotten the awkwardness from this morning. Everything's fine again. You can do this.
The car ride is long. Four hours turns into five (road construction) and then six (a rest stop for lunch) and then seven (traffic). When you start getting closer, maybe an hour or so away, you can start to see snow covering the ground and the tree branches, and it only gets thicker as time goes on. It's not actively snowing, which is good, but it's clear that they've gotten a massive snowfall recently.
Even when navigating roads that are a bit more windy and a bit more... snowy, you suppose, for lack of a better way to describe the rough road conditions, Levi's a perfect driver. You don't feel unsafe, not even for a moment, and you appreciate how attentive he is when he drives.
"This is a hell of a lot of snow," he remarks when you're only five or so minutes away.
"We've had worse years," you say, shrugging. "One time we got snowed in. That one was a truly torturous Christmas."
"Is it supposed to snow while we're here?"
You checked the weather this morning, before you left. "Yeah. Tomorrow night, I think? And all day the day after? But I think it stops on New Year's Eve."
Today's the 28th- so, plenty of snow on the 29th and 30th, and then one day without it, and then you leave on New Year's day. So you have to survive three full days with your family.
That's fine, right? You made it three full days with Levi's family. Granted, one of those days you went out dress shopping and then holed up in his room for the rest of the day, and one of the others, you spent a good chunk of your time out of the house at a Christmas market. Not too many places to escape when you're here.
A few minutes later, Levi's pulling the car into the driveway up to the lodge. You swallow the lump in your throat as dread starts to build up in your brain. The lodge is large, yes, but when there's twenty or so people staying in it, it gets crowded pretty quickly.
