"Don't, please," you hear from Kuchel, so quietly that you nearly miss it.
"-and you know full well she never would've survived and that means you never would've either. All of the shit I do for you and this is the thanks I get? I hate to see how you would've treated your birth father, if this is what I have to put up with."
Levi's dry voice makes your shoulders rise. "With a father like you, I may as well be fatherless."
Your hand rises to cover your mouth so your gasp can't be heard out loud. There's a slam. "You ungrateful, pathetic-" Lovof is snarling.
Another slam. Silence. Then, you hear Levi say, "gala tonight, and then I'm leaving. I'll be out of your fucking hair before you're out of bed tomorrow."
More clattering, and then footsteps. It takes you a bit too long to realize that the footsteps are coming towards you, and you've barely stumbled two steps backwards when Levi rounds the corner.
His eyes lock on you, and both of you freeze up. He's tense, unbelievably so, with his hands clenched into fists at his side and his shoulders rising and falling with every quick breath. There's a tightness to his face you've never seen, with his jaw locked and his eyes furious.
When his eyes meet yours, it's like his angry expression is just... put on pause. Levi straightens up, shoulders rolling back and hands relaxing, like he's trying to force himself to ignore how angry you know he was only moments ago.
You don't know what to say. You genuinely don't. You're still within earshot of the dining room, so you don't know if you should say anything at all. All you can do is stare, because you don't know what Levi's going to do, or what you could do to help, or...
Levi exhales, and he extends his arm.
Swallowing hard, you reach out and weave your arm through his, keeping your hold loose. Levi starts to walk and you walk with him, heading back the way you came.
The second you're in his room and the door is closed, Levi groans out loud. "How much did you hear?" he asks, moving to his dresser. He's not looking at you.
You stand in place awkwardly, fidgeting with your fingers. "Just the- the last minute or so," you say as Levi paces across his room. "I'm sorry, I- I didn't really want to go in there with all that-"
"It's fine, you're fine," Levi says, still making strides across his room. "Shit. We have that same fucking argument every single damn time, and he just- he's such a fucking delusional asshole."
He collapses onto his bed, hands pressed to his forehead. You stay where you are, unsure of what to do.
Fuck. Okay, you should've known something like this was going to happen: both of you discussed how you can't stand your families, arguments were bound to pop up. Neither of you really talked about how to handle this. You're not actually his girlfriend, you can't just hug him and ask him if he wants to talk about it, or...
Wait. You're not his girlfriend, no, but the two of you are fairly alike. If you just had a massive argument with your parents about something that frustrates you, what would you want? Probably not for him to start interrogating you. No, you'd want a distraction for a bit, to get out of the house and give yourself a chance to calm down, and then maybe you'd talk about it.
Okay, distraction. Yeah, you can give this a shot. Levi's still laying on his bed, so you walk a bit closer, still a bit nervous about being too close. When men get angry, they can react in many different ways, and some of those could spell trouble for you. Not that you think Levi's like that, but you hardly know him, so you can't be too careful.
