7. it doesn't count under mistletoe

Start from the beginning

"You knew exactly what you were asking me."

You frown at him. "No. You made it dirty."

He stares at you for a moment. "You're annoying," Levi says.

"What happened to funny and charismatic? And awkward, all at the same time," you add, thinking of what he said before your first kiss.

Levi rolls his eyes. "You were awkward for a kiss. That was it."

"Not awkward anymore?"

"Not really."

"Not really?"

"You're a bit stiff when you waltz."

"Fine, I'll just melt into the floor, then."

"I'm sure there's a middle ground you could find."

Your lips quirk up into a smile, and he's smirking at you. This is nice; it's easy, talking to him. Hange was right: you think it'll be easy to be friends with him.

"I'll meet you in the dining hall for breakfast," Levi says, noticing that you still have to get ready. "You know how to get there?"

You shrug. "Might accidentally wander into the wine cellar."

"I've never shown you the wine cellar."

"You have a wine cellar?" you ask, surprised that your joke happens to be true.

Levi rolls his eyes. "Guess I'll have to keep you from having too much punch tonight, if you're such an alcoholic," he says, and you press a hand to your chest to feign offense. "Get ready. I'll meet you there."

He leaves, leaving you alone in his massive room. You get changed, but you don't leave right away- you curl up in his bed under all of his lovely heated blankets for an extra five minutes before you realize that you're actually pretty hungry and you get up.

The dining room's not actually that hard to get to. Yes, the mansion is a bit of a maze, but you've taken this route a few times, so you think you're okay. Especially since as you get closer, you can hear voices, and... oh, shit, people are yelling.

You slow your steps, pausing right before you can turn the corner that would put you in sight of the dining room. You freeze in place, and you listen.

"Dear, please, this doesn't require a fight," you hear Kuchel pleading, and your heart clenches in your chest.

"So you're just going to let our son throw his life away," Lovof demands. "You're going to let him go into the world blind when if he'd just listen to me, for once, I could get him connections and-"

"I'm not your son," you hear Levi snap, and you can feel goosebumps rising across your skin. He's been cross before, yes, but you've never heard him yell.

"I'm setting you up for life and you have the nerve to tell me you're not my son. There are thousands of other kids out there that would kill for this life, Levi."

A sigh. "How many times are we going to have this fight before you get it through your thick skull that I don't give a shit?" Levi argues, and you hear the movement of furniture. Is he standing? "I'm not your fucking puppet."

"I think it's admirable, that he wants to-"

"Do you know how this looks?" Lovof demands, cutting Kuchel off. "If he wants nothing to do with me? In the public eye, it's-"

"If?" Levi snaps.

"You're ungrateful," he continues, and there's more furniture moving. "Ungrateful! What would have happened to you and your mother if I hadn't picked you up off the street-"
