"No," you mutter.
"Or rich, shitty stepfathers?"
"Also no."
"Yeah, I don't like 'em either. And that Lovof? The asshole to rule over all other assholes." Kenny narrows his eyes at you. "So you're actually datin' the kid? And you like him?"
The temptation to just spill everything right here and now is strong, but your commitment to this fake relationship is stronger. "Yes," you say. "I do."
"I'll be damned. You're missing a spine, but you ain't bad."
"I'm-" you cut yourself off, biting your tongue. You pull out your phone again, but still nothing from Levi. Fuck, you just want to go to bed.
Kenny sighs. "You done with this party?" You nod. "Yeah, me too. Let's find your boyfriend and get out of here."
He starts to walk, and with a sigh, you follow him. Kenny's got his hands jammed in his pockets and he's still wearing his leather jacket, whistling as he wanders down the hall. You don't have a great idea of where you are, so you've got no idea where you're headed. Hopefully to Levi.
Sure enough, you start to hear voices, and before you know it, you're back in the entryway right outside the ballroom. There's a few people lingering outside, having side conversations, but the majority of the party is still in the ballroom.
"Bunch of scum," Kenny mutters under his breath, looking around. You don't even have to think about replying; your phone buzzes in your pocket. You pull it out and the relief that floods your brain nearly makes you dizzy; it's Levi.
You click the button to accept the call and he doesn't give you a chance to talk. "Are you okay? Where are you?"
"I'm- I'm just outside the ballroom," you say, glancing at Kenny, who's staring at you. "I'm sorry, I- I left and I got lost, and-"
"Are you okay?" he repeats.
"Yeah, I'm okay, I'm-"
Your words are cut off because your eyes land on Levi, storming out of the ballroom. His eyes meet yours and you can see his shoulders slump in relief before he hangs up and tucks his phone away, crossing the room until he's in front of you. "Mikasa mentioned she saw you with Lovof," he murmurs, and then one of his hands is cupping your jaw. "And that you stormed off. You're okay?"
You feel like you could melt into a puddle on the floor, and you have to remind yourself that this is all for show before you manage, "I'm fine, he's just- he was rude. And I- well, he's a dick."
"He is," Levi agrees.
"Fuck yeah he is," Kenny agrees next to you.
You'd forgotten he was there. Levi glares at him. "Get lost and don't steal anything," he tells him, dropping your face and taking your hand. "Don't make this worse for her than it already is."
Her being Kuchel, you assume. "Yeah, yeah, I'm not that dumb, kid," his uncle scoffs. "If I'm stealin' anything, there ain't no way he's finding out I took it." Sensing that Levi's about to pull you away, he looks to you and nods. "Nice meetin' ya."
Levi rolls his eyes. "Let's go," he murmurs, and you shoot Kenny what you think is a forced smile before your fake boyfriend pulls you away.
A few turns later, you're at Levi's room, and with the door closed behind you, Levi spins on you. "What did he say to you?" he asks, and his hands go to your shoulders, and then your face. "He's a piece of shit. I'll fucking-"
He cuts himself off, but his fingers are still on your jaw, and your heart's going a million miles an hour. You're away from people in the privacy of his room, he doesn't have to be doing this. "He just- he asked if I thought I was good enough to be your girlfriend, and then I- well, I asked him if he thought he was good enough to be your stepfather, and then he just- he said some shitty things, and-"
"You said what?" Levi interrupts.
You pause, then pinch your lips together.
Your anxiety is through the roof, and you're waiting for Levi to scold you or get mad at you or literally say anything negative, but in a surprising turn of events, he actually chuckles. He's smirking as his thumb brushes over your cheekbone and he murmurs, "you're great."
He's not mad. A tiny smile pushes its way onto your face. "Thanks, I think," you murmur.
His smirk widens just the slightest bit. Then, he seems to realize what he's doing, and Levi drops his hand. "I'll get one of the maids to bring us food," he says, turning away from you and pulling off his suit jacket. "We'll leave whenever you want tomorrow. It's a long drive, right?"
Right. You stumble toward your suitcase, almost dizzy. "Yeah," you confirm. "Four hours, give or take."
You glance back at him; he's rolling up the sleeves of his shirt. When his grey eyes meet yours, he says, "you're a damn good fake girlfriend, with all the shit you've had to put up with."
"Wasn't all bad," you reply, lips twitching.
"Not all bad?"
"My fake boyfriend isn't awful."
"You expected him to be?"
"Oh, yeah. A total piece of shit."
Levi's smirking now. "You've got a low bar."
"If you saw the type of men I had to deal with in my engineering classes, you'd understand."
His smirk fades. "You're okay," he says, more as a statement than a question. "And you'd tell me if you weren't. Right?"
Your smile is weak, but it's there. "I would," you confirm. "Thank you."
The two of you stare at each other for another moment. Then, Levi breaks away and heads to his closet, and you turn back to your suitcase.
After a long, long shower (and a ten minute window before that where you relish the last time you're going to wear this gorgeous, gorgeous dress), some dinner, and plenty of packing of suitcases, you and Levi finally get to bed. You want to say something to Levi: that you're grateful he's genuinely worried about you, that he's been a great fake boyfriend, that you don't regret this at all, that you hope he's still up for your family tomorrow.
You don't get the chance. The second your head hits the pillow, you're out like a light.
.
Levi thinks you're insane. But in a good way.
When he'd first met you and agreed to all of this, he'd expected you to be reserved. Quiet. You'd make a good fake girlfriend, not some hothead with no filter that could ruin this whole thing before it started. And yes, you were reserved and quiet, but you were kind and you were funny and he decided that maybe this wouldn't be so bad.
Now he's lived with you, and he's watched you get angry, complain about his stepfather, defend him when he's not around to defend himself. He's watched you be snarky, bickering with him and even giving Kenny a bit of sarcasm. And he's watched you be excited, spinning around in dresses, the sun in your smile, and...
But your insanity must be rubbing off on him. It has to be.
That's the only plausible explanation for why, in this massive, Alaskan king-sized bed, he's woken up to find himself curled up next to you. And his chest is pressed to your back, and his arm is over your side, and his hand is resting lightly on your ribcage, and your hand is covering his.
Levi doesn't know why or how. He doesn't know how the two of you got into this position, how any of this happened- and why he's so reluctant to move.
He shifts slightly. Your grip tightens on his hand.
Yeah. He's got to be insane.
Because instead of pulling away and moving over, Levi shuts his eyes, buries his nose in your hair, and falls back asleep.
