4. it doesn't count if it's to convince the in-laws

Start from the beginning

"It's yours."

You look to him. "What?"

"You take the bed. I'll take the chair."

"Hell no!"

"I like sleeping in chairs."

"Who the hell likes sleeping in chairs?"

"I do."

You roll your eyes. "You're crazy," you tell him, and his lips twitch. You're sitting a few feet away from him, but if you wanted to, you could lean over and grab his hand. Why are you even thinking that? Back on track. "I'm your guest. There's no way you're not sleeping in your own bed."

Levi seems to get what you're implying. "You're okay with sharing?" he asks carefully.

You shrug. "If you are. Your bed's huge."

"If you're comfortable with it."

"Yeah." You think of the rooms in the lodge that your family rents. "We'll be sharing a bed at my place and it's not going to be quite this large, so we may as well work our way up," you joke.

He nods. Levi sets his hands behind him and leans back. "Okay."

Another question rises, and you try to figure out how to say it. "This- this act," you say, dropping your voice as you point between the two of you. "Do you- does your family have security cameras or something? Because I think you wanted to keep it up in the hall?"

"The staff like to gossip," Levi replies. "There's cameras outside the house but not inside."

"Okay. Okay, good."

A pause. You don't mind the quiet between the two of you: sometimes it's awkward, sometimes it's not. Now? It is, just a bit. "What'd you think?" Levi eventually asks. "Of dinner."

You're quiet for a bit, trying to figure out how to voice your thoughts. "Your mom's pretty," you offer. "And she's super nice."

He frowns at you. "That's the best you've got?"

"Not quite sure what you want me to say."

"You're allowed to speak your mind."

Are you, though? One wrong word and you strain your already tense friendship- acquaintanceship? Is that a thing?- with Levi. "I wasn't lying," you say quietly, shrugging. "Your mom's pretty."

His gaze softens slightly, and he turns on the bed to face you. "Look," Levi says, crossing his arms. "I get that this is... unorthodox. But I know you're uncomfortable and this isn't easy for you, like it's not going to be easy for me when we switch up. Don't feel like you need to filter yourself. Just be honest."

Your eyes widen slightly, and you pinch your lips together. Making himself a safe person to talk to in what he recognizes is a stressful environment for you? That's... sweet of him. Not that you'd expected him to be awful, but... well, you wouldn't have been surprised if all he said was "good night" and that was that.

Levi scoffs. "Don't look at me like that, this is basic human decency."

"I wasn't- I wasn't looking at you like that," you mutter, looking away, not even sure what 'that' is. "Yeah, basic human decency, but not everyone exhibits basic human decency, so... it's a plus."

"Pros and cons of fake dating Levi Ackerman," Levi says dryly. "Pros: basic human decency."

You smile. "Cons, addicted to tea."

"I am not."

"I've literally never seen you without tea in your hands."

He pauses, thinking back to every time you've hung out. Even at the restaurant that night you'd been interrogated by Hange, even in the car, even when you'd just arrived not even an hour ago. "Shit," Levi says aloud. "It's not an addiction."
