He slows the car, stopping for a red light. "I am," Levi says, looking to you. "You're funny. Charismatic. I'm not."
Your eyes feel like they're going to bug out of your head. "You think I'm charismatic?" you ask in surprise. "Have you met me?"
The light turns green. Levi looks forward again, pressing on the gas. You stare at him stupidly, trying to wonder what he sees in you, and then you ask, "you think I'm funny?"
"Ish."
"Ish?"
He shrugs. "We don't know each other well. Maybe you're not."
"But from first impressions, you thought I was funny."
"Not from first impressions. From that pizza date." His eyes flicker to you, then back to the road. "Some shit you said. You're amusing."
Amusing. Huh. "You're kind of funny too, you know," you say. "I don't think you mean to be, but you are."
"I definitely don't mean to be. I'm not funny."
"We were- I think we were complaining about our dads, and you just said 'fathers', and that made me smile," you say, crossing your arms. "That was funny."
"You've got a weird sense of humor if you thought that was funny."
You roll your eyes. "Says the one who thinks I'm funny. Maybe we've both got weird senses of humor, then."
Levi takes a left turn. "We're back to being too similar now." You sigh, sinking into your seat, and he adds, "your turn, I tried and got shot down."
You think for a minute, fiddling with your fingers. "I think you're..." What's the nicest way to say grumpier? Moodier? Okay, maybe he was right about you being more optimistic. "You're a bit more... unapproachable?" you finish weakly.
"Only a bit?" Levi asks.
He doesn't sound offended in the slightest. "You're always glaring," you say.
"You say that like you don't have a resting bitch face."
"I don't!" you insist.
His eyes flicker to you- a look of are you kidding me- before he's focused on the road again. "We can agree to disagree," Levi says, and he sounds amused.
You scoff. "Maybe I do, but not as much as you do."
"Fair."
He drives in silence for a while after that. You curl up in the heated seat, watching the world go by from the car window. You think you've passed the 'holy shit is this actually happening' phase and have now slipped into the 'holy shit I have to meet his family' phase. You're not a fan of meeting new people in general, let alone your fake boyfriend's parents. God, this is going to be awful.
At some point during the ride, you speak into the silence again. "Is this a good time to mention that I hate meeting new people?" you say.
"I gathered that much," Levi mutters.
Another thought occurs to you, and you keep your gaze fixed on the darkness outside your window as you murmur, "you know, you could just ditch me after this. Like, drop me off at my family's place, then leave. I wouldn't be able to stop you."
You probably shouldn't have said that, because if he wasn't already thinking it, he's definitely going to be thinking it now. But Levi's blunt, and he's honest, and... if that's something he's considering, he'll tell you. Right? He'd let you know.
He doesn't reply. As the silence continues, your anxiety rises, and you're doing your best not to squirm in your spot. You wouldn't blame him if he wants to. Your family's going to be a lot, and-
