3. it doesn't count

Start from the beginning

He still hasn't started the car. You glance at him; he's staring at you. You hate the silence because now all you're doing is thinking, thinking about how stupid this is and how everything could go wrong and god what were you thinking...

His gaze lingers on you for a moment, then shifts away. "This is easily the stupidest thing I've ever done," he says as he turns the car on.

Your lips twitch. "Me too."

"And that includes switching majors without telling your parents?"

"Hey, I never switched, I just accepted a different offer."

"Still."

You think on it as Levi shifts the car into drive and starts heading out from the gas station. "This is probably stupider," you say honestly. "Considering that my mom probably cares more about my relationship status than my education."

"Hm." You glance at him; he's got his hand on the back of your seat. "Then we're both stupid," he says.

"We are," you agree as he turns back onto the main road. "We've known each other for, what, a couple of weeks?"

"Barely. I wouldn't consider doing this with someone I've known for years, let alone someone I knew for all of fifteen minutes before I agreed."

You frown. "Then why'd you say yes?"

Levi shrugs, taking a right turn that makes you lean in your seat. "You looked like you got it."

Yeah, that's what made you agree to this too. Hange doesn't get it: the dread, the anxiety. They try to empathize, which you appreciate them for, but they won't ever understand, not like Levi does. Levi, who'd almost been ready to compete with you in who had a worse time at home for the holidays.

"I don't think this would've worked if we weren't similar people either," you murmur.

"You believe Hange's bullshit about that?"

"Kind of."

"Enlighten me."

"How many friends do you have?"

Levi doesn't reply right away. Then, he grumbles, "Erwin and Hange. That's it."

You smile to yourself. "That's one more than I have. All I've got is Hange."

"Bullshit."

"How is that bullshit?"

"You and Hange just moved in together in September, right?" You nod. "So who the hell were you friends with for the last three years?"

You shrug. "No one, really." Levi looks to you, and you quickly add, "it's not a bad thing, honestly. I like being on my own. Less stress and less anxiety. I don't have to worry about whether they're upset with me, or mad at me, or... anything, really. Sure, sometimes it's lonely, but I like my own company."

He doesn't reply. You feel like you've talked too much, so you pinch your lips together to shut yourself up.

Eventually, Levi murmurs, "I get it."

You figured he would. From all the time you spent talking, Levi seems like a bit of a loner like you- and just like you, he was 'adopted' by Hange. Hange hadn't been kidding when they said they thought you were compatible.

"Do you think we're a bit too similar?" you ask.

Levi scoffs. "No."

"No?"

"No. You're fifty times more optimistic."

You frown. You're really not. "You must be ridiculously pessimistic, then," you say.
