"Yep," you confirm, exiting the car on your side. "I can get it. Be back in two minutes."
As a thank you to him for driving, you pick up a tea for Levi as well. He's going to be doing all of the driving for the next week or so, and when he'd told you he had a car, you'd offered to chip in on gas. It just seemed like the appropriate thing to do. But Levi had refused, so... well, you'll just have to pay him back in tea.
When you return to the car, he's already inside. He opens a window so you can pass him his tea, then get into the car yourself. "Thanks," he murmurs, closing the window before the car can get too cold.
"Yeah, no problem," you reply quietly, trying to figure out how to bridge the gap that you're trying to cross. You know you need to figure this out and if you wait too long, then it gets too awkward, and then it's too late, and...
"What?" Levi asks.
You look up. "Hm?"
"You want to ask me something. Ask me something."
Fine. Okay. "Uh, you said you've never had a girlfriend?" you guess, and he nods. "Have you, uh, ever kissed someone before?"
Levi rolls his eyes. "Yeah."
"Okay, so you know how awkward first kisses are."
He stares at you, but you pinch your lips together, confidence worn out for now. Luckily, he clues in, and he nods, looking away from you. "So we should get it over with now," Levi says slowly. "Make our lives easier."
You nod. "Mhm."
"Okay."
Neither of you say a word. He looks to you and you hold his gaze for barely a second before you look away, feeling heat rush to your face. But no, you suggested this and you need to do this, and you need to... no.
"...You told Hange you kissed me first," you say.
Levi shifts in his seat. "Seriously? We're going off of what we told Hange?"
You shrug. "May as well have some truth to it."
He stares at you for a second, like he can't tell if you're serious or not. You are, but mostly because you're too nervous to initiate it yourself. It doesn't matter if this is fake or not: making the first move still makes you nervous.
"Fine," he says.
You straighten up. "Okay," you squeak out.
Levi stares at you for a moment, leans in slightly, then turns his head away and scoffs. "You're so awkward," he grumbles.
"Oh, come on," you protest. "First kisses always make me nervous."
"It doesn't count."
"It... doesn't count."
He looks back to you again. "It's not like we're actually dating," Levi says, eyebrows raised as if to say get your head on straight. "So it doesn't count."
Right. Okay. "It doesn't count," you agree. "Okay."
Levi nods in return. His hand rises to your head, fingers curling into the back of your neck, and you shut your eyes to try and force yourself to relax. You hear him shift in his seat, then you feel his breath on your lips, and then he kisses you.
It's simple and short: Levi holds himself against your lips for one, two, three seconds before he pulls back. His fingers linger on your skin for a moment before he sits himself back in his seat. "There," he says briskly. "First one out of the way."
"First one out of the way," you agree, turning yourself so that you're facing the front. "The rest will be easier."
"The rest will be easier," Levi repeats.
