3. it doesn't count

Start from the beginning

"We're fine, Hange," you say, dropping the pillow into your lap. "Neither of us like photos. It'll be understandable that we don't have any."

Hange throws their hands up in the air. "Fine! But if your family gets nosy and wants photos and then this whole thing starts to fall apart, don't blame me, I warned you." They clap their hands together. "But seriously, don't let it fall apart, my blog is counting on the two of you."

You and Levi groan in unison. "That damn blog," Levi complains.

"Don't use my name," you plead.

Hange sighs dramatically. "You two are so boring! You don't like sharing, you don't like photos, you don't like anything- what do you like?"

"Silence," Levi grumbles at the same time you say, "peace and quiet."

"You know, I was so desperate to get you out of the house," Hange says, pointing to you, and you feel your face flush, "that I didn't realize who I was introducing you to. I should've known the two of you would get along! You two can totally pull this off, but only if-"

"We're not taking photos," you interrupt.

"Oh, come on! You-"

"Hange," Levi snaps, cutting off your overly enthusiastic friend, "we've talked and we figured this shit out and we know what we're going to do. One more word out of you and I'm- and we're calling it quits on this whole thing," he threatens, eyes flickering to you. "I'm serious."

You nod along, looking from Levi to Hange. "One more word," you agree.

Hange's mouth snaps shut, and they freeze in place.

Your shoulders drop as you flop back into the couch. "Thank you," Levi mutters sarcastically, running a hand through his hair. "That took way too long. Can I go now?"

Hange opens their mouth, and you point a finger at them. "Words!"

They gesture frantically, which you take to mean when the hell can I talk. Levi shoves himself up from the couch, muttering, "I'm leaving," and he strides past Hange and to the door.

For a second, you panic: Levi's leaving and Hange's making an attempt at sign language (you have no idea if it's good or not) and you're mildly overwhelmed, but you pull yourself enough to tell Hange, "I'm going to walk him out, then I'll- then I'll come back, and you can talk again."

Hange gives you two aggressive thumbs ups, and you scamper after Levi, who's barely closed the door behind him. You nearly trip over your own feet to catch up to him in the hall, but you notice he's not walking that fast, so you think he's okay with you walking him down. Otherwise, he might've tried harder to put some distance between the two of you.

You and Levi head down the hall in silence, then down the stairs, and before you've figured out what to say to him, the two of you are in the lobby. He hasn't looked at you once, so you doubt he's inclined to say anything, but- ugh-

"We don't have to do this," you get out.

Levi pauses in front of the main doors. "You don't want to do this."

"No, that's-" you bite your tongue. "It's a lot," you say, fidgeting with your sleeves. "And it's- it's going to get complicated, and we're going to have to improvise, and the PDA, and Hange's a lot to handle, there's- there's just a lot we have to consider," you finish with a weak shrug. "So I get it if you don't..."

You trail off. You don't really know what you're saying.

Levi sighs, and he reaches for the door. "Do you still want to do this?"
