|Sonic's.POV|

"How's the new house working out for you?" Tails asks me through the curiosity of living the isolated life.

"Not as bad as you'd think. The people are friendly around here. It's quieter than it was back home." I say before popping a blueberry in my mouth, "Is Knuckles giving you any trouble?" I ask.

"He's a piece of work, but it's better than being alone." He confesses.

I sit back in my chair and eat another blueberry from the bowl of fruit on the table. "You're like a puppy with separation anxiety." I chuckle.

"I only said he could live here because I feel safer with another person in the house. Plus he's not so high maintenance, and he's noisy so hopefully it keeps people away." Tails rambles.

I smile to myself, knowing that he's still happy at home. "He must be so busy working in the garage all day. I figured with all that noise, you'd lose your mind by now."

"Don't worry, he has." I hear Knuckles talk into the phone very quickly before Tails waves him off. I could tell from the noises.

"Did you check your mail yet?" Tails fusses through the phone.

I take a peak at the table and see the folded envelopes. He sent me a list of phone numbers. Each one appeared unfamiliar. Except that last one was strange. It almost looked like it was practiced, as if someone  tried to mimic Tail's handwriting while also making it stand out from the rest. The ink was slightly darker and the letters appeared a bit feathered out, as if the paper couldn't handle the ink.

"Is this some kind of silly prank?" I smiled to myself, thinking of the annoyed expression he probably has on his face right now.

"Those are the numbers to all our houses since I know you never bothered to remember them." He sighed.

I never use the phone, I never call, I usually join in when Tails is already on the phone. But I never use it on my own accord which is why I never bothered to remember anyone's numbers. Now that I'm living a few towns away, I sort of have to keep tabs on everyone on my own.

Of course, the only number I do remember is the one to my old home with Tails.

"I'll get busy then." I say to him before hanging up.

I'll quickly make the phone calls to these numbers just so I know which people they belong to. He didn't write down the names that these numbers belonged to. I knew he did that on purpose so that I'd actually have to call them.

I grab a notepad and a pen, calling all the numbers and writing down who they belonged to according to who answered.

☑️Amy
☑️Vanilla
☑️Big
☑️Rouge
☑️Honey
☑️Sally

Then the last number, the one number that wasn't written in the same handwriting that Tails would normally write. I'm assuming Knuckles probably wrote some fake number to mess with me. Who could it be?

I dial the number on the rotary dial phone that came with the house. This place has been vacant for about a year so a bit of dust was left behind on this thing. Must've been one of the last things I forgot to dust off when I was cleaning the place. I press the phone up to my ear.

The line cracks violently.

The static that normally occurs was blaring. Before I can pull the phone back, I hear the slightest thing.

A breath.

Not steady, but not intentional.

Someone is on the other end.
