A brown figure lightly leaped across stones sitting still on the rippling stream. Beyond the figure was a patch of grass with a rabbit nibbling on a seed. The brown cat crouched low, grass covering his face as he stalked forward. The wind blew in his face so the rabbit couldn’t scent him. The cat prepared to jump, his heart beating as he broke into a run. The rabbit looked at him then started to flee but the cat was too fast. He jumped into the air, landing right on the small creature. It let out a screech of terror but then went limp.
“Nice catch!” A gray tom congratulated the cat. The brown cat smiled at him.
“Thank you, Fish. I guess I was lucky the wind was blowing towards me and not the rabbit.” he pressed his nose to Fish.
“We should take that back to Ghost, she hasn’t been quite herself these days. Perhaps a nice meal will cheer her up,” Fish suggested, nudging the brown cat.
She hasn't been quite herself these days. The words rang through his head. Ghost was old and would die soon enough. “Hopefully she’ll eat this rabbit.” worry shone in his eyes.
“I’m sure she will, she’s strong and will serve this group of cats for longer,” Fish purred hopefully.
“I hope so,” the brown cat let out a sigh. “Let’s get going before it gets dark.”

The brown tom poked his head into Ghost’s den, the rabbit hanging from his jaw.
“Welcome, Sparrow,” an ancient cat spoke, her eyes full of wisdom.
“Hello Ghost, I brought you a rabbit,” the young brown cat purred as he dropped his catch at the leader’s paws.
Ghost smiled at him and bit into the freshly killed prey. “Thank you.”
Sparrow nodded but just as he went to leave his leader he smelled three strange scents in the den. He arched his back and unsheathed his claws, prepared to fight these strangers. “Show yourself!” he hissed, unsheathing his claws. Soon enough three cats appeared. A purple-blue tom, a black and red tom, and a small fluffy yellow she-cat.
“Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. These cats will be staying with us,” Ghost’s meow was raspy. Sparrow stared at the three with a hostile glare. He didn’t want to live with strangers!
“Hello, I’m Grape. These two are Bark and Kettle,” the purple-blue tom said as he pointed his tail at the black and red tom to the small fluffy yellow she-cat. Kettle looked nervously at Sparrow.
Sparrow looked into Kettle’s green eyes, their eyes locking for a few moments before they looked away. “I-I’m Sparrow, I’ll be showing you our uhh…” he caught himself longing for the she-cat to look at him again.
“Your what?” Bark asked, flicking his tail impatiently.
Sparrow jumped as he realized he had stopped talking. “Our land! Me and Fish will be showing you the best places to hunt and where to find water,” he finished, still looking at the she-cat.
“Thank you, Sparrow,” Kettle meowed gently. Sparrow’s face felt warm, her voice was lovely. She was also really pretty and had beautiful eyes.
You don’t know this cat, get yourself together! Sparrow forced himself to look away from the pretty she-cat. “You’re welcome,” he muttered.
“Question, where do we sleep for the night?” Bark asked as he lifted his head to the sky. It was getting dark out.
“Uhh,” he looked outside the den. He then glazed back at Kettle. He wanted a nice bed to keep her protected from danger lurking in the night. Maybe there’s a way I can keep close… That’s right! There’s a bush that me and Fish use to sleep under. Perhaps me and Kettle can lay there. Sparrow started to smile as the thought of keeping close to the pretty she-cat stayed in his mind.
“There’s a den right next to Ghost’s den, you can stay there for a while until me and Fish make more,” Sparrow said as he pointed his nose towards it.
Kettle came up to Sparrow and pressed her nose to his. “Thank you again.” she purred.
Sparrow’s fur burned with embarrassment. “Where will you be staying?” she asked as Grape and Bark walked away.
“I’ll be sleeping under the bush,” Sparrow said. His fur crawled when Kettle wrapped her tail around his. “I-I,” Sparrow didn’t know what to say. “I can’t wait to show you the land.”
“I can’t wait to see it,” Kettle purred as they walked to the bush and curled up.
Sparrow felt Kettle’s warm fur next to him and smiled as he drifted into sleep.
