it was a cold new year's eve night. character a spent it with a warm cup of (whatever your character likes to drink) and watching a movie. celebrating outside their home during the new year was not their thing. they did not like how busy the streets were, how loud the crowd can be in bars, how these silly resolutions were going to help them and others for the new year.
when it was midnight, they did their tradition and called it a night. they walked inside their bedroom and fell asleep. what they failed to realized was someone or something was guarding them from afar.
character b was a mythical being (god, messenger, ghost, etcetera). there was always something going on at a's home. almost as if something was after them. since then, b would leave crystals, tailsman, salt, etcetera after leaving just for your protection.
however, those days of hiding were over once a caught b fighting a demon in the kitchen.
