ALEYNAIA swore that she would get revenge. She swore that she would bathe in the blood of those who'd killed her mother and taken her hostage. She swore until she no longer had air in her lungs—until vengeance was the only thing keeping her alive.

But it was no way to stay alive.

Her insatiable desire made her reckless—foolish even. She didn't have the power to single-handedly take down a watercraft filled with demons, but grief had taken her logic along with any other semblance of the girl she'd once been. She'd killed 23 of them and watched as their blood seeped into the oceans, but then she'd been shot down with their unnatural weapons.

She joined them in the waters, accepting her death. She would die in shame, but at least she would not die a coward. And the bodies that floated beside her would die having reaped what they'd sown.

NETEYAM swore that he would become the man his father wanted him to be, and he was well on his way to succeeding. After his family had been targeted and forced from their home, he had allowed himself to be ruled by childish desires and childish actions, but there was no room for youth in war. He was just a boy when he'd met death the first time, and he'd been a just a boy every time he'd met it since. He'd never come as close as he had a few years ago. He could still remember his mother's cries as his life slipped away from him, but by the will of Eywa, he'd been saved.

He'd been given another chance, and he would lead his siblings as he was meant to and ensure that they would never know the heaviness of an impending death. They may have thought him a stick in the mud, but at least they were alive to think it.

Neteyam wants safety and structure, along with the promise of tomorrow, more than anything else.

When Aleynaia, half dead and wholly delirious, washes up on Metkayina shores, Neteyam begins to know chaos and desire better than he has ever known them before.

She will ruin him.

And he will let her.
