Sophie was sitting in her room, daydreaming about sky blue eyes and a crooked smile when Edaline walked in.

She smiled at her adoptive mother. "Hi, mom."

Edaline sat on her bed, running her hand over Sophie's hair. "How are you feeling?"

Sophie was surprised by the question. "I'm fine. Why?"

"You were pretty quiet at breakfast today."

Sophie could barely remember breakfast. "Oh. I guess I've been a little out of it. But I'm okay!" She tried to assure her.

Edaline smiled. "You know, you're reminding me of myself when I first started dating Grady."

Sophie felt a deep blush settle into her cheeks, but she stayed silent.

Edaline didn't seem to notice. "My head was in the clouds for weeks." She chuckled softly. "All I could think about was him."

"How did you meet?" Sophie wanted to kick herself for never asking these questions before.

Edaline was lost in a memory. "We knew each other in passing from Foxfire. But I didn't really get to know him until his winnowing gala."

"You were on each other's lists?"

Edaline nodded. "Of course I knew he was handsome. But we started talking at the gala and we just...never stopped."

"It was that easy?"

"Sometimes it can be." Edaline smiled at her. "When you're both ready to find a partner, and the feelings are there, it can be pretty amazing."

Sophie nodded, then blurted out, "I'm not going to have a winnowing gala."

Her mother didn't look the least bit surprised. "No, I didn't expect you would. But is there any particular reason you're telling me this now?" She raised her eyebrows expectantly.

Sophie blushed. "I took your advice and talked to Keefe."

"Oh?"

Sophie knew her mom was dying to know more.

"Yeah. And it was terrifying, but I told him how I felt."

"Oh, honey." Edaline sat next to Sophie and gave her a big hug. "You are so brave. I'm so proud of you."

Sophie leaned into her hug. "He likes me, too." She confessed.

She didn't have to look at Edaline to know she was smiling. "Keefe is head over heels for you, honey. He has been for a while now."

Sophie moved to look at her. "I'm starting to feel like it was obvious to everyone but me."

"Well, a mother usually notices these things. But, I don't think he was very good at hiding it." She told her, smiling.

"I didn't even realize how I felt until..."

"Until?" Edaline prompted.

Sophie sighed. "Right before she left, Ro told me that Keefe liked me. She wanted me to know so I could decide what to do with the information. I think she wanted to help him avoid a hopeless situation if I decided I didn't feel the same way."

"Ro can be very observant."

Sophie laughed. "Among other things."

"So...?" Edaline probed. "Are you and Keefe going to pursue these feelings?"

Sophie blushed and nodded. "It was pretty amazing. Everything feels... right."

Edaline hugged her again, tears shining in her eyes. "I'm so happy for you, sweetie. All a mother can want is for her child to find someone who treasures them the way Keefe treasures you."
