We all know the tale of the boy who cried wolf. He would play foolish pranks on the townspeople, unbeknownst to him that those little games would lead to his sweet blood-curdling demise, being eaten alive. Oh how I wish I could endure that death right about now..
"Look at you my little storm cloud, " my mother stated, it's sad to watch when she pretends to have any type of maternal instincts, " all grown up and ready to destroy everyone in your path. You remind me of someone, except she was a bit taller and slightly prettier around your age.. "
I knew she was referring to herself, she's usually the main subject of every sentence that happens to fall out of her mouth. "I am nothing like you mother, I may have enjoyed Nevermore, but not for the same reasons you did. I did not fall in love. I did not make friends. Your legacy has no power over me. So stop pretending that we are anything alike. " I decided to leave out how a few words I had spoken weren't entirely true.
Mother regarded my words for a split second, then ignored them entirely. She usually does that. " I was simply stating that I am happy you've managed to live up to the Addams family name. " I ignore her words, as my destination is just around the corner. " I'm not sure why you've decided to come along to this meeting, Mother. The Sheriff asked for me specifically, you'll only get in the way. " I didn't know exactly why the Sheriff had asked for me specifically, but there had better be some reason behind it. I did not ask Lurch, our butler, to drive me all the way to the Sheriff's Department just for some ridiculous chit-chat.
Mother and I stepped out of the car and headed towards the door, but before I could open it, a loud, naive, unmistakable voice echoing from the hallways stopped me dead in my tracks. " Well maybe if you spent a little less time whining about your serial killer son and a little more time doing your job we wouldn't be in this situation! "
Enid sounded as if she had enticed a fencing fight with Bianca Barclay and lost. Not that I could relate to the feeling. I opened the door slowly and peeked inside to see what was going on. "This is why Yoko is in the hospital! Because you can't do what needs to be done! You're too busy focusing on finding your little psychopath!" The Sheriff stood up, anger seething in his eyes."Don't you dare talk about my son that way!"he yelled.
"What is with this sudden need for stealth? Weren't you invited?" Mother prompted me. "Well I wouldn't want to interrupt on the interesting conversation they are having" I said, opening the door. Two pairs of eyes turned towards me. The first, filled with worry, and sudden confusion from the sight of me, Enid. The other angry, but relieved to see me, The Sheriff.
"Addams..took you long enough. There's been a situation, I need to leave this town, and you're going to be the one to solve this case while I'm gone." I scoffed at this, but Mother seemed to be taking this seriously. "What exactly is happening here? What case? " She asks. "Ask your daughter's friend. " Enid looks at me, confusion still imprinted on her face. "Wednesday? Why are you here? I thought you lived a bit farther away? I haven't seen you since break." I got a look from my mother, a look that said 'I thought you didn't have any friends? '
"My business here is not of your concern Sinclair. However, I would like to make it clear to the Sheriff that I am not some sort of savior to this town. I don't know what's going on but I want no part of it. Besides what's in it for me? " The Sheriff looked as though he was ready for this question. "If you refuse to take this case into your hands I'll have no choice but to throw your preppy little friend here in jail until I get back. Since she has quite a large amount of evidence stacked against her. "
Enid froze, looking at me like a lost little puppy. I hate it when she does that.. makes me feel.. strange, as if I owe her something. I sighed, " There won't be any need for that.. Just explain to me what happened. " I nodded towards Enid. "Last night I was sleeping in our dorm room, per usual, since I don't have a place to go to around the holidays, when I suddenly hear a loud crashing sound coming from a hall near ours, I went to see what happened and to make sure no one was hurt, but when I made it to the source of the noise I saw Yoko laying on the floor unconscious."
Enid looked down, visibly shaken up by this. "I then told our new principal what had happened and Yoko was rushed to the hospital. They later on found out that she was poisoned. The idiot Sheriff here thinks I did it, since I had given her a cake as a gift for the holidays. But I didn't poison her, the caked was laced after she got it! I wouldn't hurt her, we're friends! "
From the way she was acting, I knew Enid wasn't lying. When Enid lies she usually twitches a bit, fidgeting with her hands or bracelets. But as she was saying this, she seemed genuinely hurt and upset, and everyone at Nevermore knows she couldn't act if her head was strapped in a guillotine and she had to convince the executioner to let her go. I feel a headache forming, my twisted mind trying to figure out the best way to fix this situation. Why do I even have to fix this to begin with? If the Sheriff is so good at his job then why is he trying to make me solve this issue? And where is he going anyways?
" I fail to see how putting someone like myself in charge of this case would benefit you in any way. " The Sheriff sighs, "Look kid-" "Call me that again and you'll wake up with your eyes shoved down your throat. " "... Addams. I don't have time for your games. Trust me you are the last person I would ever want to fix this but you're the absolute last resort. All of my officers are missing and I have to find them. On top of that my kid is gone too. I know you have a knack for solving problems, probably because you learned from your father how murders are covered up-"
"Get to the point. " "The point is you "solved" the murders less than a few months ago and you probably don't want your little friend here in jail, so I suggest you take this case, it's an awfully easy one compared to the ones you'd solved before. " Becoming Jericho's junior detective was most definitely not what I was picturing myself doing this year..but the way Sinclair is looking at me.. I might not have a choice any more.
"Fine, but if you ever lay a hand on Enid I will personally tie you up, soak you in salt water and let the goats have you. And just so you know..they won't stop licking until the reach your bones." I smiled at the thought of the Sheriff screaming, his blood splattering everywhere. " Watch your mouth Addams, you don't want to end up being put in prison like your father was. " The Sheriff grabbed his bag and left before I could reply.
Mother stared at me, then back to Enid. "I wasn't aware you had friends, let alone one's you'd kill for." She said casting a look at Enid. "You didn't tell her about me? " Enid asked picking up the conversation. I immediately changed the subject. "I believe that is a matter that shouldn't be pressed on at the moment, we have more important things to talk about. Like why someone attempted to murder Yoko, and more importantly, why did they pin it on Sinclair?"
