That evening...

I sat in the main courtyard of the Mikaelson compound, holding the pendant in my hands, turning it over, when I heard Klaus' footfalls enter the courtyard.

'From what I hear, you saved the day,' he said with a soft smile.

'I wouldn't say that.'

'Ah, I see.' He sat across from me. 'So you ventured inside my brother's shattered mind, and it wasn't all unicorns and rainbows?'

'I went inside the red door,' I replied. He was looking at me, and as soon as I said those five words, his smile immediately dropped. 'I tried to save him, but the things I saw... the innocent people, the slaughter. I really thought that I would find him in a good place, but he chose the darkest part of himself.'

'You know what we are,' Klaus said. 'We are all monsters. We've committed countless atrocities over the years. But Elijah... has only ever done those things for family.' I looked at him. 'And that is why he is the very best of us. He always has been.' He got up, stepping towards me, and softly placing his hand on my shoulder and then walked away.
