76 - Could You Pass the Discomfort, Please?

"You're gonna take over the dealership? That's awesome," Miguel says.

"Well-"

"Nah, it's just an inside joke, you see when Sam was little, she used to walk around like she owned the place," Mr LaRusso explains. Ah, I see. I wouldn't want to be in Sam's position, but it must be kinda nice knowing that there's a career path just... waiting to be handed down to you.

"Can you blame her? She was practically raised on that showroom floor," Mrs LaRusso says, "almost born on it too."

I- that's- um- interesting. Ms Diaz laughs a little. I love that little duo. I would love for them to remain friends.

"Hey, whatever Sam wants to do with her life, that's entirely up to her," Mr LaRusso says, "if she decides to go to school nearby, get her MBA. USC, UCLA, I'm just saying, it's all icing on the cake."

Again, Sam looks slightly uncomfortable with this, but I don't say anything. I'll just make her more uncomfortable and I don't want that.

"So, Miguel, how's school going?" Mrs LaRusso asks.

"Uh, good, uh great actually, thanks to Parker for teaching me all that stuff last semester," Miguel says. I smile down at my plate. I can teach, but it was up to him to learn, and he did.

"Straight As for the semester, y gracias a Dios for Parker," Ms Diaz says, making me smile more. It's nice to be thanked.

"Wow," Mrs LaRusso says, impressed. As she should be, Miguel had a huge comeback story.

"Yes, total nerds, both of them," Mr Lawrence says. He's roping me into that statement too? Actually... I don't mind. He's not wrong. Makes me feel noticed.

"See, with grades like that, you can go anywhere you want," Mr LaRusso says. That's the hope.

"Yeah. I'd, uh, like to go to Stanford," Miguel says. That's one of my top colleges too! Everybody goes quiet. Oh shit, is that bad..?

"That's a pretty impressive school," Mr LaRusso says, seeming shocked but impressed.

"Yeah, I think it's like number six in the country. The campus is beautiful," Miguel says. We looked at it together, he's right, it's very pretty.

"It's definitely a top choice, but that tuition, wow.." Ms Diaz says, "we're also thinking about Santa Monica College, right Miguel? Save some money, live from home, then see where we go from there."

Now it's Miguel's turn to look uncomfortable. My heart pangs a little. Ms Diaz is right... it's expensive, and my top choice is even more so... if I even manage to get into either, I have no idea how I'll manage to pay for it without going into debt for the rest of my life...

"SMC's great too. It's right by the beach. Have you checked out their campus?" Mr LaRusso says. I have, after I realized exactly what Ms Diaz was saying. It was just like a virtual tour sort of thing.
