A/N: This chapter is not necessary to read, it is just a prologue that adds further context. Skip if needed.
This mid-spring weather is blue, with new sunshine on your face as you sit next to the window with your friends. They all have different lunch periods, so you usually stayed with them while they take their lessons.
Grade 11 was hell, packed with the biggest workload you've ever felt on your back. But now, it's senior year and it's been smooth so far, quiet, a space to breathe and enjoy everyone you've grown with those past 3 years.
The class is silent, with soft murmurs of the teacher talking about some civil war, and the sounds of pencil on lined paper and typing lull you to a nap.
Your friend nudges you out of your thoughts. "I think someone is looking for you."
"What?" You crane your neck to see the doorway of this dim afternoon classroom. A group of boys you don't really know gesturing at someone to come out.
Huddled and peering into the room like it's a page out of Where's Waldo. You don't like boys in your school.
"I don't think so," You respond to Kimberly, the friend that had just informed you, turning your head back to yourself.
Overhearing this interaction, your other friends decide to chime in.
"Yeah, your eyesight okay, Kimberly?" Ann, and your friends giggle. Ms. Weng stares at you. "Y/n, if you are going to cause a disturbance to my lesson please go somewhere else to have your lunch period."
You're half about to get up and go somewhere else when Ann talks back. "Ms. Weng it's not us! It's those people outside the hallway." She protests.
The teacher sees the group of boys still standing outside. Walking over near the entrance she calls them out. "What do you 5 need? I'm trying to teach."
There's one boy there you recognize, Nathan, the friend of that one arrogant, annoying, attention whore boy that's in nearly all your classes. Jacob. That feeling when you just know a boy is a creepy misogynist? Yeah. That's Jacob, the boy who's been tormenting you and other girls you know since middle school. Everyone else thinks he's so cool though.
"Ms. Weng! One of our friends really needs to talk to Y/n, about prom." Nathan says.
The teacher stares him down. "I don't care, you're not respecting me right now. I am working right now, you should not be causing these interruptions."
Taylor gives you a look. "Ooh, promposal?" Suggesting that someone in that friend group is trying to be your date to prom.
You pretend to throw up. "Don't say that, or I'll throw myself out this building right now."
Ann perks up. "Bet."
"Hey! Y/n! Come out, there's something outside you need to see!" You hear one of them whisper yelling. They look like idiot monkeys.
Your friends shake their heads at you. "No, they're probably trying to like, embarrass you like they do everyone!" Kimberly exclaims.
"Yeah, I know, I'm not going." You respond.
A girl behind taps you on the shoulder. She smells like sweet perfume and she's chewing like 10 pieces of gum. Jaw workout.
"Hey, I'm like, friends with them, and they're like trying to get you in the hallway so he can like, ask you to prom, so you should def go" She whispers, eyes wide and head nodding.
"Oh." You say. It's all you can say.
"Oh my god Y/n, then you like need to go then." Kimberly says. Taylor and Ann nods rapidly.
Getting up from the seat, your friends follow you, grabbing their backpacks and slowly walk out, following the 5 boys. The gum girl raises her hand. "Ms. Weng, can I also go puh-lease? It's a promposal and I wanna see so, so, bad!"
You snap your head back to her. The pure red embarrassment overwhelms you and makes your hands hot, your head hot, everything, just too hot and fuzzy. Everyone who once was working has their eyes on you now, and now it's just-
It's just-
"Class, get back to your work! You all are Seniors." Ms Weng waves her arms in the air. Seniors were responsible, mature, and able to act like a rational, polite, person.
Everyone jumps up and leaves to see anyways. What a freak show.
-----
You walk out, cheeks burning and resentment towards whoever the boy is.
Wait.
Wait.
There, he is, the number one boy you hate the most, smirking at you while his friends are holding a banner.
Would You Go To Prom With Me?
That's what it says.
The hallway is crowded with too many people. Way too much. The lights are harsh and somehow reflecting on the lockers. He starts to walk towards you, a slow stride. Wearing a loose cotton t-shirt and relaxed pants he has the audacity to wave at you.
"Y/n, would you go to prom with me? I think you're really pretty and nice and smart, and would love it if you said yes." He offers you a ring.
Does he think this is cute?
Does he think this is somehow going to make you forget all those times he's bothered you and your friends, how he took photos of you and posted it on social media with a hateful caption, humiliated and belittled you, and made you cry in your bed at night because he tortured you about every mistake you made in your schoolwork?
At that very moment, you couldn't feel anything but the suffocating choked sobs under the bed, tears wetting your pillow so much you couldn't sleep on that side. You couldn't feel anything except how puffy your eyes would be the next day, how you were in constant stress because you couldn't anticipate the next way he would make you hurt.
And what you did next on that day, on that hallway, maybe you would regret.
