Soulmates are such a taunting word for a few in the world. Once the age of 18, strings will be shown on your finger, connecting you to your soulmate. As such, soulmate doesn't always mean lovers of course. Four colors represent your string.
White stands for purity, meaning your partner has never done anything wrong in the world. Of course, if they have done something wrong, their strings will change color. No one knows the color, only those fated to each other do.
Blue stands for loyalty, meaning they'll never break your trust. Rarely would a blue break your trust, but they will be the most loyal friend or partner
Red is the worst color anyone can be matched with. Red strings mean you'll be partnered with someone who has found love but isn't their soulmate. Although they are amazing lovers, it'll be difficult to convince them of being paired.
The last color, black, stands for death. It's unknown when said death will happen, but your soulmate is no longer with the world. The string will start as a soft gray before it slowly becomes black. Once blacken, the string will slowly wither and will proceed to vanish once the grieving is properly grieved.
