juliet's thoughts immediately darted to charles. to charles and their date. the one moment she'd been subliminally waiting for since the third grade. but now she needed to be a good sister and stay with her brother. fuck, they hadn't even done anything yet and the battle between pierre and charles was already starting.
she looked at her dirty makeup bag on the dresser and at the outfit hanging on the bathroom door. and she seriously contemplated leaving pierre alone. but there were two things to know about juliet gasly: she had a huge heart and was a shit liar.
if she were to still go out with him, she'd feel bad the entire time; like gut-wrenching guilt. then, when she got back, she knew she'd slip up telling a lie about where she was. so there wasn't really a question when it came to telling charles she needed to cancel.
"i've just got to call victoria, i'll be back in a second," juliet grabbed her phone and ran out the hotel room door. she walked quickly down the hallway and searched through her contacts to find charles' name. she reached the elevator and frantically pressed the button while she pulled the phone up to her ear and waited for it to ring.
the elevator door opened and she ran in, not even realizing there was another body inside. "juliet? what're you doing?" they said and she pulled down the phone as she recognized the voice.
"thank god, i was trying to call you," she huffed and shoved her phone in her sweatshirt pocket. "i can't go out tonight."
charles' face dropped at the words and he fidgeted with his hands. "why?"
"don't tell pierre i told you this," she began, noticing the sadness in his eyes, "but he got demoted. he just came back from a meeting where they told him he'd be going back to toro rosso and alex would be brought up to red bull."
charles stayed silent as his eyes widened before he spoke softly, "wow."
juliet nodded and sighed, "i know. So i need to be a good sister and stay with him. i'm sorry...i was actually really looking forward to tonight."
"you were?" his eyes brightened as he only paid attention to the last bit of her words. the girl blushed and nodded again.
"yeah, i actually worked myself up from the fear i originally had. guess i was just worried pierre would somehow find out."
"don't worry, i would've never let that happen. besides, it was just a dinner between friends," charles lied through his teeth and immediately regretted it.
friends?
"oh," juliet gaped and looked away. the two stood silently, waiting for the door to open as the mood had changed to an uncomfortable level.
the door opened at the lobby and charles stepped out, quickly turning back to just wave goodbye. the day i don't fuck up better come soon, he thought as he exited the hotel.
