I could hear the bells clanging against each other outside the window, jingling loudly as the mini caravan chugged along slowly. We found the caravan in a dump, so we just took it and it still works now. We had spray painted it yesterday, with left over spray paint cans, me, mom and Blue, my brother. It was now bright green with a rainbow on it, and clouds, the sun and butterflies. We had found some bells in a tip and stuck them all over the caravan, making them ring whenever we drove anywhere.
At the moment, we were heading to the summer solstice festival. We were meeting our friends there and we're going to have a special festival celebration. I couldn't wait!! Summer solstice has always been my favourite out of all of them.
Mom was driving, and me and Blue were in the back. Mom doesn't have s driving license, but we havnt been caught yet. Even if the police did try to get us, we'd leg it. I'd stay with Blue and Mom would go solo, then we'd meet up at the festival we were heading to in the first place. We had it all planned because we almost got taken to prison once, for spray painting, smoking, drinking and loads of other stuff. Too many to mention. We did loads of bad stuff, but I didn't care. I love my life and life loves me. So...
Me and Blue were eating left overs from a cafe. Recycling mom called it, but I knew it was stealing technically. Blue didn't have a clue that we were doing so much illegal stuff because he just didn't understand. He's only 7, whereas I'm 16. I'm not sure when I was born, mom can't remember and I lost count years ago. I think my 17th is coming up but I'm not sure...
" Ivy! Blue! Look at that sunset! Beautiful, isn't it?! " Mom said from the front of the caravan. I pushed the food away and crawled over the sleeping bags craning my neck to peer out the window.
Mom is obsessed with Sunsets, probably because she's called Sunset. I know what your thinking, we've all got pretty weird names, right?
Ivy ~ Me ~ Blue ~ Brother ~ Sunset ~ Mom
Well, it tends to come in a package with a strange, messed up family, no home, and hardly any food.
The sun was just going behind the trees in the distance and the sky was a beautiful violet-red. Misty oranges and yellows swirled out across the sky like long tendrils of light, reaching out to something and bursting with colour. It was beautiful. I looked at Blue next to me and his face was lit up, his green eyes shining.
My mom laughed at our awed expressions and turned the radio on full. Our favourite song was playing ;
Champion Sound by Fatboy Slim
We laughed and yelled the words, rolling the windows down, disturbing the peaceful road around us. People in their cars frowned at us in annoyance and a young teenager stuck his middle finger at us. I just winked and poked my Tongue out as they zoomed away.
Me and Blue both leant back, but I soon scrambled into the front, snatching moms bag and getting out some crisps, passing some to Blue in the back. He smiled at me and I quietly aawed at him. He was so cute! He had soft brown hair and emerald green eyes, and very tan skin. He looked very similar to me, as I had chestnut brown hair that fell around my face in elegant ringlets. My skin was tan as well, but I had sapphire blue eyes instead. Like my dad.
Dad.
I don't know my dad. My mom was 13 when he knocked her up, so he abandoned her. Moms about 30 ish now, I think. Mom said she loved him, but now she's realised she just wanted someone to talk to and he just wanted a good fuck. Moms parents hated her, so she had no one to trust. She says my dad was called Chase. I've never met him, and I never want to, to be honest. My mom ran away after she had me. She packed up straight after and just left. Her parents never looked for her.
That's how she met Maya and Nadeem. They met at a Winter solstice. My mom went there with a guy ( who she never saw again ) and went travelling with them. They were all around the same age and were also runaways. We're meeting them at the festival.
" Ivy you need to change. " Mom said. I frowned. She said we would get there today. I don't need to change.
" Why? " I replied. She sighed and rubbed her head. I knew what was coming.
" We're sleeping in the caravan. The suns gone down and Im too tired. I'll get food but we'll live for another night in the caravan. We'll get to the festival tomorrow. " She said quietly.
" What?! You said we'd get there today! I'm fed up of sleeping in he van, mom! Why can't you just keep going! I hate you!!! " I screamed, my voice rising with each word. Blue was crying and mom looked pissed. This always happened. She promised something and then let us down. I dont mind being let down, it's just she shouldn't promise stuff like that if she can't garuantee it. ( s.p? )
" I can't do everything Ivy!! Just shut up!! It's not my fault I'm a single parent, or a crap parent, and I can't give you everything, you know that! Just leave it just for once! I just wish... " Mums voice trailed off and she began to cry. I felt my eyes water and we pulled over. After a few minutes of crying in a huddle we set off again. It was out of our system. It usually happened like this every week or so it it varies. We just find something that makes us just... Snap. Stupid, really.
Me and Blue swapped seats, ms in the back and him in front as I got changed. I rummaged through the plastic bag and found my Tie-Dye shirt and baggy trousers. As I got changed, I noticed I was getting quite slim now. Mom always fed us, but when we weren't at festivals it was usually just scraps. You could almost see my ribs...
Blue came to the back once I was changed and I helped him get changed. We rolled out the sleeping bags and put the folded blanket across them for extra warmth. We used the piles of clothes as pillows, but I didn't mind. It worked any way.
Mom pulled onto a service station and bought some sandwiches and drinks. As she walked to and from the mini shop, people were giving her and the caravan funny looks. As I looked out the window, I saw the guy who sweared at us again. He was with some mates outside the bar. Huh. What a dick head. He obviously recognised us, it was hard not to with mom there. She had brown hair naturally, but she died it bright pink, and she had piercings on her eyebrow, Tongue, lip, nose, all up her ears, and her belly button. I wasn't complaining though, I had peircings on my belly button, nose, lip and 3 on each ear. You could see moms piercing on her tummy as her top was way too small now.
She came back and we got in the sleeping bags, ready for another rough nights sleep. We always see the sane look on peoples faces as they see us, the same thought in their head. They were right though.
We were Gypsies.
