I was in love with a stranger—or that was what it felt like.
His intense brown eyes pierced into my soul as he stared at me. Those eyes—the perfect brown pair, as I liked to call them—were not too dark or light. They were chocolate brown. Smooth, sweet, and soothing. His eyes used to leave a warm, fuzzy feeling oozing out of my heart, but at that moment, I felt... nothing.
"SJ, please don't say what I think you're about to say." His words came out low, almost inaudible.
He had to see it coming, right? How long did he think I was going to put up with his crap? "I-I can't." My voice broke, and I blinked my tears back. I was determined not to shed a tear in front of him. "I can't do this anymore."
"I messed up, okay. I should have been there for you. You needed me, and I let you down, but... " He heaved a frustrated breath and stepped closer to me. "Please don't leave me because of it."
I shook my head in disbelief. "You think I'm leaving you only because of that?"
His eyebrows frowned at me. "Then why?"
He cannot be serious!
He have to be joking!
"You should know why, Blaze!" Fury began to burn inside my chest. "You're behaving like I said nothing about how I felt all these years!"
A hint of realization flashed across his face. "I-I'm trying."
I scoffed.
I didn't know what his definition of trying was, but it definitely wasn't the same as mine. "Not. Hard. Enough." My jaw clenched harder with the escape of every word. "What is the big secret?" A single tear betrayed me, and I wiped it away as fast as it fell.
His eyes softened, and he blew out a disgruntled breath. "I just need more time."
"It's been three years." How much time did he need? I was fed up! He took my patience for granted. I couldn't keep letting him waste my time! "Every time I break down my walls, you use my blocks and build yours higher." I fiddled with the promise ring on my finger.
His gaze shifted to my hands. "Pl-Please don't."
"I'm sorry. I can't keep holding on to a promise that doesn't exist anymore." I yanked the ring off.
He clutched at his chest with welled-up eyes and stumbled back like he had taken a bullet to his heart. My broken heart shattered even more as I put the ring on his entryway table. "I'm done. It's over." I locked eyes with him to make sure he saw how serious I was.
His pleading brown eyes tugged at my heartstrings as I turned towards the door. He gripped my wrist, and my head snapped back with a glare.
"I love you," he said in his last pathetic attempt.
I yanked my hand free. "It started to feel like you didn't." With those last words, I left and didn't look back.
