Part 11: Terrible Nightmare

Start from the beginning

"...He wants me to go to sleep every night so we can..meet up..."

"Don't."

"He's threatening to hurt my real body, though!!" You protested, though you didn't quite know why. "I saw the scars he's left on me already! I- I don't want to return to my body only for it to remind me of nothing but pain every time I look down at myself!!!" The other sighed, glancing down at one of his own scar covered arms and brushing his other hand over it gently.

"...It's...not worth it... Trust me..."

"Bu-bu-but- ..when did I fall asleep anyways?!"

"Only a couple hours ago.."

"I...don't remember that. I thought this body didn't need sleep!"

"Only when you're injured. You've been still healing a lot since I...brutalized you... Heh, maybe I shouldn't have stabbed you just now... Sorry." Lowering his head to his lap.

"No-no! Thank you! I was...really starting to lose hope that I would ever escape that nightmare." You thanked sincerely, even leaning forward so you were sitting normally.

Steve smiled a smidge. "Glad I could help." You two sat silently again, eyes wandering where they pleased around the dark forest surrounding the small fire. "I suggest you eat more then if you want to avoid falling asleep." Steve said as he pushed his legs under himself and stood with sore muscles all over.

"But he'll hurt my body more!!"

"Would you prefer that..or another 'nightmare'?" The man really made you stop and question. When your head lowered to stare at the fire, "..The choice is yours. I'll go check on the traps to see if they've caught anything yet. You stay here; try not to get hurt any more than you already have."

"Okay.."

"And take care of your wounds while I'm away, too. Infection might worsen your condition." Steve picked up his bloodied sword again, wiped the blood on it off into the grass, and vanished among the dark forest with little more than a small torch to light his way. You cleaned and bandages the stab and bite wounds while he was away. He returned about half an hour later with a fresh kill: hare, catching you right as you were about to doze off beside the fire.

"Ay!" The man snapped at you, shocking you up from the grass. "This should help." Holding out the rabbit. Your stomach growled in anticipation. "You can gut, skin and cook it if that'll help you stay awake. You know how to do all that, right?"

You nodded quickly. "Of course!"

"Well. Here you go then." Tossing the dead hare on the ground before you. You pulled out a little knife you kept from those guards you had mugged and posed as a few days ago. Steve sat with a sigh across from the fire as you began cutting the small animal open. Grunting slightly, the man massaged one of his tight calves as he sat, then massaged an aching shoulder muscle of his.

"You look like you need some rest." You pointed out.

"Nawhh... Just... Heh. Okay, maybe just a little. Typically, I don't hike around as much as I have been. Have your muscles been cramping?"

"Hm.. Hard to tell... Maybe?.... You should really get some sleep. I'll be alright. Thanks for all you've done so far... It..really means a lot."

"Eh, I should be apologizing for how long it took me to believe you weren't actually Herobrine."

"Well you had good reason to be suspicious!"

"Maybe, but I should have at least considered the possibility a little sooner!"

"Yeh... Probably..." You finally attached a big chunk of meat to a stick and held it over the fire. "I think I...'m beginning to understand how you feel now.. It's..terrible having to see someone who looks so much like the guy who just...attacked you...suddenly not be- heh, that same person, I guess.."

"Ouch. Yeah, sorry if me being here isn't helping any."

"No-no, it's fine. I already see you as separate from him anyway. Just don't grow your hair out anymore and I'll be fine." Steve chuckled.

"Heh, that's why I keep my hair as short as it is. Hate looking in the mirror and being reminded of him..." You both sighed. "...I'll stay up with you to help keep you awake."

"What?! No, you need your sleep!"

"It's alright. My body is what's really tired." The man then laid on his back, hands cupping the behind his head as he stared up at the twinkling stars above. "...Funny how life works, right?"

"Huh?"

"You know. How you ended up in Herobrine's body...and yet still got me to care about you..."

"Oh.. Wait, you really mean it?! Are we friends??"

"Heheh.. I guess so..." The blue eyed man smiled faintly, still star gazing. Your happiness bubbled up. It had been a while since you could call someone a true friend! You two talked the rest of the night to keep each other awake. As obviously tired as Steve was, it was touching to see him push through for you. A true friend indeed...

(I just want to prepare you guys. Don't be disappointed please if this xReader doesn't turn out like, well, a normal xReader...like it ever was "normal"... I don't want to push anything and make certain circumstances too rushed or out of place just to meet the romance quota, so don't be all too shocked at least if Herobrine is a little too toxic to get the girl in the end.
😅
Ight? At least y'all get some interesting tension from him in the meantime, lul. And yes, I have already plotted out the end. Hopefully it should be coming soon~)
