55- Don't Worry About Me

Start from the beginning

"Hey Parker!" Miguel's voice says back, "I almost didn't think you were gonna pick up."

"Yeah, sorry, I was just a little surprised. We've only talked on the phone, what? One time?"

"After your tae kwon do tournament, yeah,"

This is so weird.

"Yep, yeah, wow- sorry I'm being so weird. I'm just not used to this, like, at all," I say, laughing nervously towards the end.

"Sorry! I'm sorry, I can go if you want, I-"

"No, no, it's okay! I just don't think there's a single social situation that I've thrived in. What did you call about anyway? How'd the surgery go?" I ask, rounding a corner and snaking through people as I walk to my homeroom.

"I think it went well. I feel like I'm gonna be in physical therapy forever though,"

"Dang... just don't do what I did and train a whole bunch the second you can walk again. I still get pain in my knee sometimes. But what I think you're saying is that the surgery definitely didn't give you like, Spider-Man powers," I joke, hopefully making him smile. I hear rustling from his end, but no immediate response.

"I have just confirmed that no, I did not get Spider-Man powers from the surgery," he says. I can't help but laugh. What a dork.

"Hey if all else fails, there's the bionic leg option," I say. That would be literally so cool and I don't know if I would ever do anything greater.

"Yeah, let me put you on hold and call Tony Stark right quick,"

"You wound me, Miguel,"

Next thing I know, I'm pinned to a locker and somebody has a firm grip on my wrist. Who- Hawk. The phone drops out of my hand, landing hard on the tile floor. Damn it... that's gonna leave a crack. I put my foot on it so he can't grab it.

"Who were you talking to?" he asks before I can say anything. What, was he eavesdropping on my conversation?!

"It's none of your business, now let go of me before I call for help," I say. I question if I would be loud enough, but I'm in a busy hallway. Someone would notice.

"I heard you say it. Why the hell were you talking to Miguel?" Hawk asks. That's what this is about?! Are you kidding me?!

"He called me, asshole," I say. I do a quick glance around the hallway, looking for a counselor or a teacher, then I swiftly knee him in the stomach, pulling him into a hug directly after so it looks at least somewhat normal. I hate this with every fiber of my being.

"Stay away from me, and stay away from my friends," I say, "and keep your hands off of me or next time, only one of us will get out of this without repercussion, and it won't be you."

I push him away from me. He glares at me, but walks away, leaving me with a pounding heart. I pray nobody really saw what just happened. I can't get in trouble. Not again. I straighten out my clothes, then pick up my phone from the ground. A new crack snakes from the top left corner to the bottom right, with smaller cracks branching out from it. Great. The cracks are the least of my worries. Miguel is still on the call... did he hear all of that..? I put the phone to my ear and continue on towards my homeroom.

"Hello..? Are you still-"

"Parker? Are you okay? What just happened? I heard a locker slam and you saying some stuff but I couldn't really make anything out. It sounded like you dropped your phone, is everything okay?" Miguel asks hurriedly. As it usually does, him asking if I'm okay makes my eyes water, even though I wasn't going to cry before.
