A Necessary Light

INT. COURTROOM, NEW YORK CITY -- DAY

A large courtroom is filled with people all sitting patiently in their seats, some still, others fidgeting. Reporters, camera workers, and soldiers are scattered throughout the room.

ARTHUR HAVEN, a man in his late 20's wearing a new fully black suit who looks equally dangerous as he is kind, sits on trial as he is being asked questions by the judge.

JUDGE

So, Mr. Haven, you do admit to the murder of Eric Thwart?

ARTHUR HAVEN

Yes your honor.

JUDGE

In that case I think I can say that not only I but the whole nation, and frankly the whole world, are greatly saddened to have to put a great hero in prison. Since you are the only super human and this is a homicide case I would like to ask a few more questions.

MRS. THWART, a woman in her sixties, stands to accuse Arthur Haven directly.

MRS. THWART

He doesn't deserve any more questioning. Just lock him up so he doesn't cause anymore harm.

JUDGE

Please settle down ma'am. And yes Mr. Haven stands here for murder but this case is more complicated than that. I understand your anger for the death of your son but Mr. Haven has saved millions of lives, surely you recognize at least that.

MRS. THWART

I don't care! He is a murderer, my son was an innocent man!

Arthur looks to the judge.

ARTHUR HAVEN

May I?

JUDGE

Go ahead.

ARTHUR HAVEN

Mrs. Thwart, I do fully agree that I am a murderer and regret the actions I took. But I can't sit by as you say your son was an innocent man. He killed four woman, including my wife. So please, do not go there.

Mrs. Thwart sits back down.

JUDGE

I will now continue with the-

Suddenly a loud noise is heard and the courtroom doors suddenly open. GENERAL ANDERSON, a military general in his fifties wearing his fully decorated uniform, comes into the room and stands before the judge.

GENERAL ANDERSON

I am sorry judge, there is an emergency. I know that Arthur is on trial but he is needed immediately, you can't lock him up now, not that he could actually be contained unless he wanted to.

JUDGE

What type of emergency?

GENERAL ANDERSON

There is a terrorist group that is threatening to cause an attack in London. They know that Arthur can't help anymore so they are using that to their advantage.

ARTHUR HAVEN

No, I need to see the consequences of my actions. My sins are no less than the people I go against.

The judge slams down his gavel.

JUDGE

This court session will be continued on another date. Arthur Haven, for now you will go to stop this threat.

GENERAL ANDERSON

Thank you judge.

Mrs. Thwart stands up and starts yelling.
