Haley's POV
Instead of waking Cameron, I stare at him, taking in every detail. I wouldn't change a single thing about him. All of his flaws are invisible to me. If to say he has any flaws. His lovely eyes start stirring and they flutter open. "Well hello there."
"Hi." I lean forward and kiss his nose, savoring the electricity that vibrates between our touch.
"That was a nice way of apologizing last night." He winks.
My lips spread into a smirk. "I really am sorry. For everything. I was so selfish and I'm sorry."
"Hey. Don't worry about it. You're forgiven. And I'm also very sorry. I don't even know where to begin."
"And you don't have to begin." I trace his lips with my finger. "We both made mistakes so let's just forget them."
"That sounds good."
"I missed you so much. You have no idea."
"I think I do." He combs his fingers through my hair. "It was hell without you. I don't even want to think about it. What do you want for breakfast?"
"Oh shit. I should go." I stand up, clothed in Cameron's boxers and oversized t shirt. I grab the sweatshirt I wore here from the floor and slip it on.
"Why so soon?" He furrows his eyebrows.
"It's Odie. He isn't doing good and to be honest, I have no idea what to do."
"What?" He stands up with me. I can see the emotion in his eyes.
I lean my back against the wall and let it support my weight. "Why am I stuck with all the hard decisions. Would if I don't make the right one Cameron?"
"Hey." He places his hand behind my ear and tilts my head back so I meet his eyes. "I know you'll make the right decision. You're so much braver than you think you are. I promise. I could come with you if you want."
I nod my head slowly.
"Okay. I'm gonna go take a quick shower. I'll be down in a minute."
I slip my yoga pants back on and throw my tangled hair up in a pony tail. I tilt my chin up a little. I have so much to be grateful for. I shouldn't be pouting.
Without thinking, I grab my phone.
As it rings, I start downstairs. This isn't a great idea but it would show my maturity. I start nawing on my fingernails.
"Hello?" The familiar voice on the other end answers. The voice that I associate with so much happiness. And so much pain.
"Mom?"
She gasps a little. "Oh. Haley. How are you?"
"I'm doing okay. What about you?"
"I'm alright." Her voice sounds different, worn down. "Is something wrong?"
"Um, no. Well actually, I'm just calling because I thought I'd let you know... Odie isn't doing too well. I'm not sure how much longer he has."
"Oh no. Well I'm very sorry to hear that." A little bit of emotion shows through.
"Yeah. I just wanted to let you know." I close my eyes, realizing how stupid it was to call her.
"Thank you. I'll be thinking of him... and you."
"Thanks mom."
"Mhmm. Oh. And Haley?"
"Yeah?"
"I love you."
My breath catches in my throat. Did I hear that correctly? "Oh. Yeah. Well I got to go."
I hang up and furrow my eyebrows. An unintentional smile starts creeping into my face. I was wrong. Maybe she does love me. Or maybe she had a change of heart. I should have said it back, but I don't know if it's the truth. And do I even believe her?
I'm not sure.
"You ready babe?" Cameron asks, running his hand over my head.
"Yeah." I smile, still ditzy with the possibility of a relationship with my mom.
"Woah. Why are you so happy?"
"Because I have every reason to be." I swiftly kiss his cheek and race him outside, the crisp morning air hitting my face and making me feel alive.
More alive then I've felt in a long time.
