A shiver ran down your spine at her raw hurtful statement.

"Even after all this, Marc still hasn't told you the truth," Elodie withered in disappointment.

"What are you trying to get at?" you narrowed your eyes at her.

"Your boyfriend was a mercenary. He has butchered a lot of people. But one stands out. A very young archeologist. One with a cerulean pendant,"

Your face screwed up in a silent cry and your right hand automatically went up to grasp the crystal-shaped pendant that was hanging closely against your chest.

"You're saying he killed Marcus ?" you stared at her, "Along with Layla's father?"

"I didn't, you did," Elodie rectified, "And, perhaps, Marc can verify it,"

You glared at her one final time before spinning in your place and striding away, feeling your emotions rise within you as your heart twisted bitterly.

"I do hope you find out the truth," Elodie called after you truthfully, sympathy filling her face, "The truth about everything. You deserve closure,"

By now, Steven had pulled out Ammit's ushabti and held it in his hand, looking down at it in astonishment.

There was an overlap of footsteps from two corners of the tomb and Steven turned around cautiously. He let out a breath he had been holding when he saw that it was just you and Layla.

"Layla, Y/N, look. We won," Steven held it up to your view cheerfully, "And the ushabti goes to us,"

But neither you nor Layla smiled at all, face frozen in a calculating look.

"I had to go digging down old Alexander the Great's gullet, but I found it," Steven continued to explain.

"You all right, loves?" Steven looked from you to Layla

"Can he hear me?" Layla asked Steven.

"Alexander? I don't think so. God, I hope not,"

"What happened to my father?"

"Did you know how Marcus was killed?" you took slow steps toward Steven, reaching him before Layla.

"What?" Steven scrunched his face in confusion.

You were running thin on patience, "I'm talking to you, Marc!" you shoved the man back in frustration.

Steven's body shifted slightly as his eyes twitched. Marc returned back in control.

"Come on. Let's go, let's go," He spoke quickly as he tried to walk away and avoid the question you and Layla had asked.

Layla caught his wrists, "No,"

"We need to go right now," he tried to free his wrists.

"Marc, no, no," the woman refused strongly, "What happened to my father?"

"Listen to me," Marc looked from you to Layla, "We need to leave right now. I will explain everything, I swear. But we have to go,"

"Did you kill Abdullah El-Faouly and Marcus Hill?" Layla questioned, venom evident in her tone as he tried to hold herself together.

"Of course not" Marc defended in offence, "Of course, I didn't!"

"But you were there," Layla nodded, deciphering his remorseful glance, "You were there,"

"I—"

"Tell me you weren't there," your teary eyes locked with his guilty ones.

"I was there. Yeah, I was there," Marc admitted shamefully, "Marcus was executed along with Layla's father,"

You let out a strangled gasp, covering your mouth with your hand. A sick feeling spread through your stomach.

"My partner got greedy and he executed everyone at the dig site. I tried to save your father, and Marcus too," he explained desperately, "But I couldn't save him. And I—"

"No," Layla scoffed, "But you brought a killer right to them!" she hit him back harshly, making him stumble slightly.

"Yeah, he shot me too. I was supposed to die that night. But I didn't die that night. And I should have. I've tried to tell you since the moment we met—"

Layla let out a peal of derisive laughter as you pressed the heels of your hand to your eyes.

"I just didn't know—"

"Oh, my God," Layla exclaimed in realization, "That's the reason that we met. You just had a guilty conscience,"

"Would you even have let me know otherwise?" You scoffed at him, "That you knew how Marcus died?"

Marc didn't answer and ducked his head silently, clenching his jaw.

You sniffed with a sour look, "Thought so,"

Marc's heart broke when he saw you both in such vulnerable conditions. And to come to the blatant conclusion that he was the reason for your agony, he felt a surge of self-hatred rise within him.

There was a thudding and you three snapped your heads towards where the sound came from.

"They're here,"
