patriot at heart

freedom:
the sound of fire cracking at night,
fireworks dissolving into the air,
marshmallows roasting at the pit.

freedom:
the right to speak, the right to hear,
the right to make s'mores and smile.

rights to all.
rights to all except us.

the right to my body is now in your hands.
my health—my own—is among your mind.
my rights are no longer so,
for you have them tucked under your fingers,
dragged them across your face,
and called it a smile.

calling it fair. calling it right.
calling it freedom.

freedom:
we have lost the right to our own bodies.
